Now, I have something I want to keep and protect at all costs.

I sit in front of her and capture the back of her neck. My lips take hers, and she softens, releasing a little mewl of need. She gets under my skin, and I like it.

When I release her, her dark eyes meet mine and she lets out a breath. I want to capture this moment forever. See that love shining in her eyes every day for the rest of my life. This girl is mine. And no one will take what’s mine.

CHAPTER 31

The Taunt

Luke

Eli and I sit at the table in the cafeteria, waiting. That’s all this seems to be. A waiting game to see who’s going to break first. We haven’t had much luck getting more information.

Jack sits down across from me and smirks. His leg bounces up and down, but he looks rested at least and not completely strung out.

“Did you enjoy your night with our girl?” I watch the door.

“Always.” Jack leans in. “Slept buried deep inside her, woke up hard and fucking her, so yeah, good night.”

I shake my head. That’s something I’d do. It’s something I’ve done. Many times.

Caden carries Nico’s backpack as Nico and Harper come into the cafeteria. She’s hovering over Nico like he might break. He doesn’t need it. I want to laugh, but it’s part of Harper’s appeal. She cares for all of us.

Zach gets up from his table and walks over to get in their way. Harper lifts her gaze, but there isn’t any fear in it. Caden steps up against her back.

When I start to rise, Eli shakes his head. “Don’t play into his game. He wants to see what happens when he approaches our girl. This is safe, controlled. Chill.”

I relax into my chair again and watch as Zach says something. Harper nods and then he moves out of the way. Zach’s eyes lock with mine, and he gives me a knowing smile.

I give him the appropriate nod before turning my attention back to Harper. Part of me wants to draw her onto my lap, but she settles Nico onto a chair with his leg up. When she glances my way, I let our connection fill the space between us, and it helps settle me.

Eli draws her down on his lap. “How are you, kitten?”

She glances at me before Caden sets a tray of food in front of her. “I’m good.”

Eli’s hand rests possessively on her thigh. Her cheeks grow pinker.

“What did he want?” Eli’s words are low, but if someone’s listening in, they’re already aware that Zach stopped our girl and already know what he said.

“He wanted to know if I was wearing this to the bonfire tonight.” She smooths her hands over her skirt. “Though now that I think about it, I might change into jeans.”

“That might not be a bad idea.” Nico puts his hand on her knee, and she covers it with hers.

“It does get cold, even with the bonfire.” Eli tips her chin so he can search her eyes. “Don’t get separated from us, kitten.”

She nods and rests her head against his shoulder. Some of the fight drains out of her. Zach wants to crush us through her. He’s not going to charm his way into her life like Tanner tried. After the drugging at my house, I’m worried he might try something like that with Harper.

We can’t police everything she ingests, and there’s always the possibility he’ll just inject her with something. He has access to drugs and the equipment to do that. I don’t like him being around her, but we have to stay the course.

We could try taking him down. He’s selling drugs, but he’s smart enough to not get caught. That, and he’s got an in with the police because of Sidney. And who knows her game?

Sidney laughs at the basketball table, drawing my attention. What’s her plan? She can’t get me back, so how’s she going to change the game? She may have just talked to my father, but my father would have fucked her in a heartbeat if she offered. He has no issues using someone her age.

But what does that gain her? He’s not devoted to the women he fucks. He vowed to never remarry. Was it just to fuck with my brain and somehow make me want her back? Or maybe that was her last fuck you to me.

I’m just waiting for the moment she tries to throw it in my face.

Harper touches my shoulder. I didn’t even realize she’d gotten up, so lost in my thoughts. I lean back in my chair and she straddles me, facing me.
