When he came at her again, she had her Walther at the ready, and shot him between the eyes.

But there was no time to celebrate. Who knew when Ming Kow and his bodyguards would arrive? She ran to Cooper’s side and slapped him on the cheeks until he opened his eyes.

“Come on, Sleeping Beauty,” she said in a tone she hoped would incite him to move on his own. He was way too heavy for her to carry.

He groaned and struggled to sit. She couldn’t help noticing the nasty bruises and cuts on his chest and face. She had no idea what they’d done to him—most likely pounded the shit out of him—but it looked like it hurt like hell.

She finally got him to his feet and tried to lead him to the door, but he hesitated. “Wait,” he said in a scratchy voice. He turned around and headed back toward Bruno and fished around in his pockets until he found a medallion, one she recognized from the night they’d frolicked.

Seriously? He went back for a necklace?

She swallowed her frustration and focused on getting him out of the warehouse. As they neared the door, she motioned him back and took a moment to check the yard, to make sure the coast was clear. It was not.

To her horror, Ming Kow’s convoy of sedans was pulling up.

Shit.

“Wait,” she whispered, and she watched with bated breath as the bodyguards piled out and followed Ming Kow into the front door of the warehouse. One of them remained in the yard though.

Damn.

She quickly screwed on her silencer and gestured to Cooper that they sidle along the outer wall of the warehouse to the front. She aimed and pulled the trigger and the guard dropped without a sound.

“Can you run?” she asked, but it was a rhetorical question.

They had to run.

Together they sprinted for the cover of another warehouse and then another. They were nearly at her car when the cry went up and a bullet whizzed by her head.

“Hurry,” she urged.

Ah, but there was no need to hurry. To her horror, a second bullet, and a third passed by and landed squarely in the tires of her car.

She glanced to the left and to the right, analyzing her options. They could dive into the water of the bay and try to swim to safety, or they could run. Both options were dim.

Damn it. Damn it all anyway.

Why hadn’t Ming Kow gone to that meeting? Why hadn’t he given her just a minute more to escape? How would they—

To her horror, another black sedan came screaming around the corner straight at them. It made a tight turn and screeched to a stop…right between them and the gunmen. The door opened and Gregor poked his grinning face out. “Get in,” he barked.

Nat had never been so happy to see him. She pushed Cooper into the backseat of the car and leaped in behind him.

Vasili, Gregor’s driver, floored the gas and they roared away, just in the nick of time.

As Nat peeped out the back window, she had a clear view of Ming Kow, screaming his rage. Thank God the glass was bullet proof.

And thank God Gregor had come.

Chapter Six

It was a little mortifying, being rescued by a woman, but Cooper couldn’t be too upset. She’d saved his life. There was no doubt about it.

And she was so fucking hot.

He’d never met a woman like her. A complete badass who was also sexy as hell.

He couldn’t keep his eyes off her as the car roared away from the docks and up into the hills. He might have been staring a bit too much, because their companion, an older man with a fierce countenance, cleared his throat. When Cooper glanced at him, he glowered. And growled.
