Her lungs burned as they struggled for air, each breath a gasp in the smoke-filled room.
As if in response, a shuddering cough wracked Darragh's body, and Lara felt a flicker of hope ignite in her breast. His eyes fluttered open, clouded with confusion, yet alive.
"Wha… Lara?" he rasped, his gaze locking onto hers.
"Shh, dinnae speak," she urged, tears streaming down her face as she embraced him tightly. "We need tae leave this place now, but I cannae carry ye, so ye must find the strength within ye."
With every second that passed, she knew the fire was growing hungrier, consuming all that stood in its path. The whole place could come down on them at any second.
Darragh struggled to sit up, flexing his weakened muscles, now free of their bonds. Lara's thoughts raced, desperately seeking a way out of their fiery tomb. The sound of collapsing timber thundered nearby, heralding the cottage's imminent demise.
"Lean on me, Darragh," Lara said, gritting her teeth as she shifted her weight to support him. "We'll make it through this together."
"Ye… ye shouldnae be here…" he mumbled, and she could hear pain and guilt in his voice as he struggled to rise.
"Neither should ye," she retorted, her eyes blazing with determination. "Now, are ye going tae wallow in self-pity, or will ye help me save our lives?"
For a moment, Darragh's gaze wavered, but then, as if her words had sparked some life back into him, he nodded, gripping her hand tightly and pulling himself up to lean on her shoulder.
The world seemed to blur as Lara supported him with her shoulder as they stumbled through the smoke. Coughs wracked her frame, sapping the strength from her legs.
"Ye need tae flee," Darragh muttered weakly as he staggered, his voice barely audible above the crackling of the flames. "Leave me… save yerself."
"Never." Lara declared, though her eyes streamed, and her throat burned. "I'll nae abandon ye, Darragh."
Through the haze, a splintered beam loomed before them, its once-sturdy form now warped and twisted by the flames’ cruel embrace. With a grunt of effort, Lara shoved it aside, her palms seared by the scorching wood.
A few moments later, they fell out of what was left of the doorway, crawled as far away from the blaze as they could, and collapsed together on the ground outside, coughing and gasping for air.
"Remember, Darragh, when we first met?" she croaked as they propped each other up. "In that room in Castle MacNeil, when ye took me from the cell, and ye promised me we'd face things together."
"Aye," he rasped, "and I meant it, Lara. I swear, I did."
"Well, ye spoke truly, fer look at us now."
For a moment, their gazes held, two souls bound together by love and determination. Then, with trembling hands, Lara cupped Darragh's face and pressed her lips to his, pouring her heart and soul into a kiss that spoke of love and passion, and the unwavering resolve to survive against the odds together.
