"Perhaps it is, Mr. MacDonald," she teased, her blue eyes sparkling with delight.
In that moment, Lara felt more alive than she ever had before, the sensation of the water on her skin both invigorating and soothing. The droplets clung to her body like tiny beads of glass, creating a delicious contrast between the cold liquid and the heat of Darragh's gaze.
"Yer quite the fierce one," Darragh remarked, feigning surrender by raising his hands in mock defeat. "But dinnae forget, I've got some tricks up my sleeve."
"Really now?" Lara challenged, smiling at his playful expression. "Show me what you've got, then."
Darragh lunged forward, scooping up a handful of water and splattering it in Lara's face. She gasped, wiping her eyes and sputtering, but her laughter betrayed her amusement.
"All right," she conceded, shivering slightly from the cold water dripping down her face. "You win that round, Mr. MacDonald."
"Ah, but there's still plenty more to come," he warned with a wink, his fingers brushing against hers as they stepped further into the loch.
As they continued their playful banter, Lara felt the weight of the world lifting from her shoulders, replaced by the simple joy of being with Darragh.
"Yer eyes sparkle like the stars themselves," Darragh whispered, his hand gently caressing her cheek. "I dinnae ken how I got so lucky as tae find ye, Lara."
"Nor I," she replied, her heart swelling with emotion. "Ye've brought a light into my life I never kenned was missing."
"Ah, lass, it’s I who should be saying that about ye," he countered, his eyes full of warmth and sincerity.
As they continued to exchange tender words, Lara could feel the invisible strings between their hearts tightening, drawing them closer than ever before. The world seemed to fall away, leaving only the two of them, bound by the love that blossomed in their hearts.
But as Darragh's hand left her cheek, it brushed against his side, where a sheath should have been holding his trusted knife. His expression changed instantly, the warmth in his eyes replaced by unease. He patted his belt, searching for the blade, but it was nowhere to be found.
"Something wrong?" Lara asked, concerned by the sudden shift in Darragh's demeanor.
"Me dirk’s gone," he muttered, clearly troubled. "I must've lost it at some point today."
"Perhaps it slipped out when we were playing in the water?" Lara suggested, trying to ease his worry.
"Mayhap," he said, scanning the loch's surface with furrowed brows. "I'll look for it later. It's nae just any knife, ye see. Me da gave it to me before he died, and I've carried it with me ever since."
"Then we will find it," Lara reassured him. "Together."
Darragh nodded, his eyes still clouded by anxiety. Lara understood the knife was more than a simple tool. To lose it would be to lose a piece of himself, and she knew that the fear of such loss stirred the shadows of his nighttime episodes.
Lara watched Darragh pace back and forth, his brow furrowed in deep thought.
"Ye ken," he said, barely containing his frustration, "I have a gnawing suspicion that the knife might have fallen out during me spar with Gil."
"Is it possible?" Lara asked with concern.
With a sigh, Darragh ran a hand through his tousled hair. "Aye, there's a chance. I remember feeling something slip when we were grappling, but I didnae think much of it at the time."
"Perhaps we should speak to Gil about it? Ask if he has found it?" Lara suggested tentatively, and Darragh nodded.
As they walked back towards the castle, Lara couldn't help but observe the tension radiating from Darragh's broad shoulders. His fists clenched and unclenched as they moved, betraying the turmoil brewing within him.
"We’ll find it, dinnae worry." Lara reached out to touch his arm gently.
"Och, I'm fine, lass, it’s nae that," he reassured her, but his tone was hollow, and his eyes were haunted. "I just cannae shake the feeling that something's amiss."
