"Ye're welcome," Gil replied, grinning like a mischievous imp. "Now, how about we take a walk in the courtyard? It'll help work out those kinks in yer muscles, and maybe we can talk about what's been bothering ye."

"Ye read me too well, me friend," Darragh sighed, knowing he could use an understanding ear. He nodded in agreement, and together, they headed towards the courtyard to face the day and whatever challenges it would bring.

They walked in silence, and Darragh hesitated before finally spilling his thoughts, letting his fears and frustrations tumble out like stones in a torrent. "It's just… the way everyone looks at me, Gil. As if I'm naught but a traitor or a fool."

"Ah, let them stare," Gil dismissed them with a wave of his hand. "They dinnae ken what's truly inside yer heart. And besides, ye've got at least one ally here, do ye nae?"

"Thank ye, Gil," Darragh said softly, feeling a weight lift from his shoulders, if only slightly.

"Any time," Gil replied, his sincerity shining through his playful grin.

Their easy camaraderie was a balm to Darragh's weary soul.

Gil's laughter echoed through the crisp morning air, a warm contrast to the lingering chill of the water that clung to Darragh's shivering frame. "Ye really went and slept in the stable, did ye? I thought only madmen willingly left the comfort of a marriage bed," he teased with a grin.

"Maybe I am mad," Darragh muttered grimly.

"And maybe we're all a bit mad in these times," Gil conceded, placing a sympathetic hand on Darragh's shoulder. "But I'll nae judge ye fer your choices."

"It’s appreciated," Darragh replied, feeling the sincerity in Gil's words like a salve to his wounded spirit. "I just… couldnae face the whispers and accusing glances any longer. Nae last night." His voice cracked as he spoke, revealing the depth of his weariness.

"Then let me help ye find some respite from those cruel tongues," Gil suggested, his gaze flicking to the courtyard beyond, as if he'd found the answer to all their troubles.

Under a sky painted with streaks of dawn's light, Darragh and Gil stood facing one another on the dew-laden grass, their wooden swords at the ready. The chill morning air nipped at Darragh's exposed skin as he gripped his sword tightly, but it wasn't enough to quell the fire burning within him.

"Ye sure ye're up for this?" Gil asked, the concern evident in his voice as he studied Darragh's weary countenance.

"Never been more certain," Darragh replied, gritting his teeth. The courtyard had become an escape from the castle's suffocating whispers, and he welcomed the chance to work out his frustrations through physical exertion.

As they began to spar, the sound of wood clashing against wood echoed through the empty courtyard. Darragh felt the weight of his burdens lessen with each strike, and he found himself pouring out his heart to Gil between breaths.

"Gregor… that snake… I heard him speak vile words about Lara last night," Darragh confessed, his voice tight with anger as he lunged forward, sending a powerful blow towards Gil. "It was too much tae bear. I had tae stand up fer her."

Gil parried the attack with practiced ease. "Aye, I am getting tae ken Gregor all too well. He's a man who thrives on discord, stirring the pot wherever he can." His eyes met Darragh's, offering understanding and support.

"Yet Lara saw naught but senseless violence in my actions," Darragh continued, his frustration clear as he struck again, harder this time. "She thought I fought without reason, and I could nae bring myself tae argue with her. So, I chose tae sleep in the stables, away from the prying eyes and judgmental whispers."

"Yer heart was in the right place, Darragh," Gil reassured him, blocking the blow and countering with his own. "But ye cannae let Gregor's venomous words dictate the path ye walk. Ye need tae rise above it."

The sound of their swords clashing rang out again, each strike a punctuation to their conversation. Darragh's breaths came in ragged gasps, but the relief he found in speaking his truth was undeniable.

"Thank ye, Gil," Darragh murmured as they paused for a moment, sweat beading on his brow. "Fer listening, and fer seeing the truth behind the lies."

"Me pleasure, me friend," Gil replied, smiling warmly before raising his sword once more.

As they continued their dance of wood and sweat, Darragh felt the weight of his burdens lighten slightly. His breath caught in his throat as he deftly sidestepped Gil's swift strike, the wooden sword whistling past his ear. Their eyes locked, and Darragh mustered the courage to voice the question that had been plaguing him. "Gil, why does Quinn bear such enmity towards me?"

Gil seemed hesitant, his chest heaving as he drew a ragged breath, before sighing heavily. "Quinn has his reasons, Darragh, but at the heart of it lies his fear of Lara ending up hurt."

Darragh's grip tightened on his makeshift weapon, knuckles whitening, as Gil continued. "He's fiercely protective of her, aye. He'd face any foe tae shield her from pain, be it of the body or of the heart."

The revelation struck Darragh like a blow to the gut, and for a moment, their swords remained still as he took in Gil's words. Yet soon enough, the dance resumed, each parry and thrust echoing the inner turmoil brewing within Darragh.

"Then I've given him reason tae worry," he admitted, his voice strained with effort as he blocked another of Gil's attacks. The thought of causing distress to the woman he'd come to care for was unbearable, but he couldn't deny the truth of the matter. "I care fer Lara deeply, Gil, and I never meant tae bring harm tae her or your family."

"Quinn's protectiveness runs deep, Darragh," Gil said, his eyes softening in understanding. "But if ye prove yerself true, he may come tae see yer worth."

As their wooden swords clashed once more, Darragh found solace in Gil's candidness, the weight of his concerns easing. The bracing morning air filled his lungs, invigorating him with each drawn breath.

"Thank ye, Gil," Darragh said, his voice tinged with gratitude. "Yer words have given me clarity. I'll strive tae prove myself worthy of Lara and yer family's trust."

"Ye have the heart of a warrior and the soul of a poet, Darragh," Gil replied, smiling through his exertion. "I believe in ye."

With renewed determination, Darragh faced his sparring partner, their wooden swords singing a harmony of resolve and understanding.
