He knew that his face was bloodied and bruised from the punches he had taken from Athol, but he didn’t care. The pain had been partially numbed by the icy temperatures outside and Iain was more focused on making sure that May was all right first.

“Aye, all right, I will help ye first, my lady, but I will have someone come and clean yer cuts while ye wait, my laird.”

Iain had almost forgotten what the death of May’s father meant for the two of them. It would mean that they were now to inherit the position that he had once never imagined himself fulfilling. Iain realized that they were going to be leading a clan; they would be the people that made the important decisions just as Bruce did, and just as Alistair had done.

“Where are they?” a familiar voice came from the doorway of the chambers, “Ah, my laird, my lady, I am so sorry for yer loss.”

Bruce bowed his head in front of May as Iain managed only a small nod of acknowledgment to his guardian.

“There was nothing that could be done, the late laird sacrificed himself to save his daughter’s life. If he hadn’t done so, then May wouldnae be here in front of us today,” Iain said.

“Well, he was a very brave man and he loved ye dearly,” Bruce nodded as he turned to look at May.

Iain could see that she was fighting back tears again. She was used to being so strong that seeing her so broken was hard for everyone in the room.

“Are the prisoners in the dungeon?” Iain asked, realizing for the first time just how hoarse his voice sounded.

“Aye, they are locked away for good. Ye dinnae have to worry about that for now,” Bruce shook his head, “Just concern yerself with getting better.”

Iain knew that in the morning, he would ache due to all of the fighting that had occurred that day. But he still didn’t care, there was so much work to be done that he didn’t want to miss out on while he was getting better.

“I want to go and see him,” Iain muttered.

“Ye’ll, in time. But for now, I think that ye should rest,” Bruce suggested.

“He is right,” the head healer spoke over his shoulder as he tended to the bruise on May’s forehead.

Iain sighed heavily and sat back on the bed as another healer came over to clean his dirty face. His cheek was tender from the blow that he had taken and there was a slight pain every time that he breathed in. Iain sighed in frustration as he realized that he would be in the healer’s quarters for quite some time that day.
