The only thing he could think of doing was using the letter t he still had in his possession. Perhaps he could sneak into Vanora’s and Vika’s chambers while they were otherwise occupied, find a sample of their handwriting, and compare the two. Then, if the letter matched one of them, he would know for sure who it was out of the two of them that he should blame.

He knew that their rooms were empty, having heard the two sisters walk by his room only minutes earlier, talking about heading to the market. It was the perfect opportunity for him to go and investigate, and so he creeped out of his room, making sure that no one was around, before heading towards the other end of the hall, where Vanora and Vika had their chambers.

Once he made it to the door, though, he didn’t have time to open it before Vika emerged from the room, seemingly hurrying off somewhere. Taken by surprise, Donal jumped back, and so did Vika, the two of them not expecting to see each other there.

Donal must have missed it, being lost too deep in his thoughts, but Vika had gone back to the room to grab the arisaid that she had earlier carelessly discarded on the bed.

“Donal? What are ye doing here?”

Donal faltered, unsure of what to say to her, before he remembered that he and the two sisters were, for the most part, friends.

“I came taeo see if ye and yer sister wanted to head down to the loch,” he said, and surprisingly, it didn’t sound like a bad excuse to his ears. “I suppose yer already heading out?”

“Aye, we were going to the market,” Vika confirmed. Donal watched as she came closer to him, all but pressing herself against his body. “But if ye wanted tae spend time with me, all ye have tae do is ask.”

Donal frowned in confusion. He thought that perhaps Vika was playing a trick on him, because nothing else would make sense. He didn’t know why she was acting so strangely, and he instinctively took one step backward, only to have her follow him.

“I ken what ye did tae Vanora,” Vika continued, “but she doesna feel that way about ye. I am different, though. I wanted ye ever since ye crashed into me when ye returned. I havnae stopped thinking about ye ever since, Donal, and weel…widnae ye say that I am much better than my sister?”

Donal watched as Vika ran her fingers down her chest. Her hand came down to unlace the top of her corset, but Donal quickly reached for it, stopping her. Before he knew it, though, she had her hand around his, guiding it to her breast.

He was too shocked to say anything, and he froze on the spot for a moment before withdrawing his hand, pulling back so fast that it was as though he was burned. It was something that Vika didn’t take kindly, and she put her hands on her waist, glaring at Donal.

“Dinnae ye want me?” she asked. “I have been ready tae give myself tae ye for days, ye ken. All ye need tae do is let me.”

“Vika, I…I think ye misunderstood.”

Donal wanted to approach this matter as gently as he could. He certainly didn’t want to repeat the mistake he had made with Vanora six years ago, and so he decided to let Vika down in the softest, least damaging way possible.

There was a problem, though. Donal couldn’t stop wondering why Vika had suddenly changed so drastically, acting so unlike her usual, quiet and shy demeanor. Donal had never thought that a girl like her would ever act in such a way, and having her right there, in front of him, as she offered herself to him rang all sorts of warning bells in his mind.

Vika was acting in a way that Vanora never had, even though Donal had been quick to judge the latter. Could he really have been so blind as to not notice that Vika was, in fact, the most promiscuous one of the two sisters, the one more likely to have driven his brother to insanity?

His thoughts came to a halt when he felt Vika’s lips press against his own with what he could only describe as fury. She had come closer and kissed him before he could even realize it, and he failed as he tried to extricate himself from her gently.

After all, he still didn’t want to physically hurt her.

“Bastard!”

The voice came from behind Donal, taking him by surprise. He wasn’t expecting it, nor what came next.

The figure that he quickly recognized as Angus grabbed him by the collar of his shirt and pulled him away from Vika. Angus landed a punch on Donal’s cheek, leaving his skin red and his flesh burning after the sudden attack.

Donal didn’t want to fight Angus, but what choice did he have? At first, he tried to restrain him, grabbing his wrist with his hand and pushing the other man against the nearest wall.

“Angus, stop! Stop!” Donal shouted. “I didnae want this, I never did. It was Vika who started it.”

Angus was having none of it, though, and he tried to punch Donal again, this time with his free hand. He pushed himself off the wall, taking Donal along with him and punching him again, this time in the gut, making Donal double over, wailing in pain.

“Liar!” Angus roared. He was panting, and his eyes were wide, wild with fury. “How could ye dae this? Ye kent! Ye kent how I feel about Vika, dinnae lie to me!”

“Aye, I kent, and I promise ye, I would never do anything tae hurt ye or her!” Donal shouted back. “Ye have to believe me, Angus, I dinnae ken why Vika did it!”

“He is a liar!” Vika said, joining the two men as they shouted at each other. “He forced himself on me, just like he forced himself on ma sister only days ago. Isnae that the truth, Donal? Didnae ye kiss my sister?”

Donal blinked a few times in confusion. “Aye, but I would never—”

Donal’s words were cut short by yet another punch to his gut, and at that moment, he had had about as much as he could handle. If Angus was not going to listen to any reasonable argument, then Donal would simply have to fight back.
