“So, Simon Radwell is the lucky man, huh?”
“Yes.”
She didn't look at him. Didn’t even smile.
“I remember Simon. Family is in real estate.”
She nodded, still staring at the game, even though they were changing pitchers, so nothing was happening.
“Yes. Simon is set to take over the business when his father retires.”
“Nice. How long you two been together?”
“A year.”
“Are you happy?”
She turned to face him. “Of course, I am. We’re getting married.”
Her darting eyes, the fake smile, the way she folded her arms across her chest in a defensive posture screamed otherwise.
“Good. You deserve the best, Charlie. To be loved and adored. If Simon is that for you, then I’m really happy for the both of you.”
“Thank you.” She looked away.
“So, tell me about the wedding. Maddie mentioned it's in eight weeks. You must be excited.”
Her whole body tensed before she answered.
“It’s pretty much taken care of. We’re having it at Martha’s Vineyard. His parents have a place there.”
“I hear it’s beautiful. Your family and friends are driving out?”
“Yes. Mom, Dad. Maddie, and her family.” She shrugged. “I’m not really in touch with anyone else.”
“You must have friends in the big city. At work?”
“Not close friends. We’re keeping the guest list small.”
Donnie was good at reading people. Had to be in his line of work. She was uncomfortable talking about this. She sat upright in her chair, shoulders back, jaw clenched. And she wouldn’t look at him.
“Honeymoon planned?”
“No. Not a good time with work and everything, so we’ll do something later.”
“Charlie?”
He waited until she finally turned to face him.
“Is everything OK?” It clearly wasn’t, and Maddie’s concerns about her were looking very justified.
“Yes. Everything's fine.”
“I’m surprised he isn’t here with you this weekend.” Hell, the man had money and means and could easily have spent a weekend in Toronto with his fiancé. If he wanted to.
“Like I said he’s busy, and I decided last minute to go visit home, and then come here early.”
“Charlie, if there is anything wrong, or anything you want to talk about, you can talk to me. I care about you. Never stopped.”
