“You sound so sweet, Marie. I love the way you breathe as your excitement builds.” He paused, then groaned a little, which only made her body respond with even more need. She sighed in response to that sound. “Do you remember the feel of my tongue on your skin, Marie?”

A helpless cry tried to break free, but she smothered it. She was supposed to be sleeping, not being naughty with Matteo over the phone.

“I guess you do, baby,” his low chuckle told her he was satisfied with his efforts so far.

A need to be his grew within her, nearly strangled her with the fierceness of that desire. She’d never thought she’d be the kind of woman that wanted to belong to a man, but there she was, ready to beg him to make her his in every way possible. He made her feel special, loved, even if he’d never said that word to her. In reality, they barely knew each other. That didn’t mean her instincts were wrong, though. He was the one for her, he would make her world complete.

It wasn’t the wealth he displayed that drew her, it was the way he looked at her. Like he’d fight against the world just to have her. Something deep inside her responded to that with a need for his protection, for his possession. She knew that she should probably run far, far away from the feelings he evoked, but she couldn’t. Instead, she wanted to stoke that need of his, make him take her, make her his.

A new sound shivered out of her, a sound of capitulation, perhaps, and he responded with something deep, guttural, that only made her… clench.

“Matteo,” she breathed his name, but didn’t know if he heard her, she said it so quietly. She wanted him, wanted to go to him, but she needed to stay here, in her bed, working her own clit.

“Come for me, my sweet little darling. Come for me, Marie.” His words were a whisper, as light as the sweet stroke of his tongue along her neck. They broke her, though, broke some wall that had built within her a very long time ago, and it all came crashing down around her, as her body exploded.

She said his name, over and over, as the world turned into colored waves of pleasure that left her breathless. She gasped for air in between, tried to tell him to join her, but she couldn’t say anything after a while.

Her fingers didn’t stop, not even when it became too much, and it started all over again.

“Fuck.” She heard him ground out between his teeth. “Fuck. Marie. Baby, I can’t stop this. I can’t…”

His words broke off as a strangled moan and she knew he was right there with her. He gasped, cried out something that might have been her name, she didn’t know, because she was floating all over again, in that peaceful place that he’d given to her. That he’d brought her to.

Moments passed, silent moments of nothing but their breath, the sound of her own heartbeat as her heart slammed in her chest. It felt like it wanted to pound right out of her body, but it soon calmed, until all she heard was his breath.

“Matteo?” she prompted, even though she wanted to remain in her bliss.

“I’m okay, Marie. Sleep baby. You deserve it. I’ll stay on the line, just in case you wake up and want me.”

She couldn’t help the smile on her face or the way she curled up in her small twin bed, content for now. She left the earbuds in her ears and fell into her dreams, his breath there to remind her that she was safe. For now.

Marie woke up the next morning, rested and ready for the day. Her earbuds had come out of her ears, and her phone was almost dead, so she went to the kitchen to connect it to the charger. She found Regina there, with gravy and biscuits ready and on the table.

“Good morning! I was about to wake you.” Regina was her normal chipper self, and Marie couldn’t help but respond to that.

“I must have smelled this.” She looked up from her seat at the table and smiled. “You didn’t have to do all of this. You’ve had a rough night, I’m sure.”

“Actually, I think your Mom is coming around. She went to sleep around two a.m. and has been snoozing away ever since.”

“I can’t believe it.” Marie was surprised but pleased. Maybe that was good news, then? “Has her fever broken?”

“It was down when I checked it at midnight. Let’s hope she’s out of the woods.”

“I hope so. It’s been rough.” Marie broke up her biscuits, put a fried egg on top, then smothered it all in gravy. Not the usual way to eat the dish, but that’s how she liked it.

She added a piece of sausage to her plate and dug in. Regina would have to get home soon and Marie didn’t want to keep her. Her excursions the night before must have drained her energy, because she ended up eating an extra biscuit with a piece of sausage stuffed into it as Regina left.

“See you tonight.” Regina waved and left through the backdoor.

Marie went to her mother’s room, checked on her, and saw that she was still asleep. Ruby’s skin felt cool to the touch, for the first time in days, and she didn’t whimper in her sleep, as she’d done the few moments she’d actually slept. Marie knew Ruby was on the road to recovery now, and the relief she felt almost dropped her to the floor.

Hopefully, the ranting and raving would be over now.

Marie went to the bathroom had a quick shower and dressed in her usual attire. A clean pair of shorts, a bright green t-shirt, and her hair down to dry. She checked on her mother one more time, then went to the kitchen to clean it up. She put the radio on and hummed along to it as she washed the dishes up.

Her phone chirped, and she quickly dried her hands to see what it said. Only one person knew her phone number, so she didn’t doubt who it was from.
