Meredith began to twirl around in circles, trying to take everything in, while saying “wow” over and over. The hotel reminded me of a log cabin, but obviously a fancier version. The entire hotel was an architectural wonder as far as I was concerned with all its fancy wooden surfaces and glass walls.

“Wow, indeed.”

The host handed us our room keys and together, Meredith and I looked for our room.

“This is awesome,” she kept saying over and over and once I found our room and opened the door. I thought so too. Suddenly, I didn’t feel like such a loser. I felt kind of liberated.

“You’re smiling,” Meredith said in a sing-song voice.

I knew she was right, but I was feeling contrary.

“Yeah, I’m smiling… and what?”

“I thought you were going to be boring and down in the dumps all day.”

“Well, fooled you. I’m fine. Perfectly fine.”

“So what exactly happened with your boyfriend?” she asked sitting down on the bed.

“Nothing that would interest you, just boring adult stuff,” I said, checking out the kitchenette and bathroom. Everything was spotless and luxurious with a rustic feeling.

“Boring, huh? Really? You expect me to believe that?”

“Really.”

“So why did you guys break up?”

“Because I didn’t like him anymore.”

“I don’t believe you.”

“Well, I don’t know what to tell you, kid.”

“Did he cheat on you?”

I didn’t want to lie to her, but I also didn’t know what to say.

So I said, “Let’s talk about something else. Want to head to the lake or pool?”

She looked like she wanted to argue, but it was too late. I had already won. We had both seen the pool on the way in and even though the lake was beautiful, the indoor pool was tempting too.

We didn’t even bother to unpack. We just tossed our bags on the beds, found our swimsuits and then decided to head to the lake first.

According to what I’d read online, all the supplies were free to hotel guests. So when Meredith and I arrived at the lake, we had our pick of canoes, kayaks, jet skis and a host of other supplies needed for every watersport I could imagine.

Of course, Meredith wanted to do the water skis. I promptly told her no.

“You should reconsider. It’s a ton of fun,” said a voice behind us.

I turned and looked behind me and standing there was a man who looked like a minor Greek god.

“I’m Brock,” he said offering his hand as he smiled down at me.

I took his hand, looking up at him in unmasked adoration. He was at least six-four. His hair was sandy blonde and his eyes very blue. At first glance, I would say he wasn’t the kind of guy that I typically dated because he was just so darn beautiful. He was clean shaven and wearing nothing more than a pair of shorts that rode low on his hips. He looked like a surfer, like he belonged in Southern California. I wasn’t sure if that’s where surfers lived or not, but that sounded right.

But I didn’t care where he was from. Yikes, he was hot. So hot that I wanted to cover Meredith’s eyes.

“Are you a model or something?” she asked for the both of us.
