I loved Sylvia. “So when did you join Infinity?”

He hesitated and then said simply, “Recently.”

“So you were violating the policy too, huh?”

He looked at me curiously. I guess he hadn’t read the rules.

“You know.... us seeing each other when we were only supposed to be dating people from Infinity Connections is against company policy.”

He shrugged. “Oh yeah, but no one cares.”

“Sylvia does.”

“Sylvia is a force to be reckoned with.”

“Yeah, but she’s a bleeding heart romantic under all that toughness.”

He nodded in agreement. “That’s what makes her the best at her job.”

I thought about what she had told me about deserving love. “Yeah she’s really sweet and believes in the company’s goals. She wants to help people find their own happily ever after.”

“She’s a sucker for romance, that’s all.”

“Sounds like you got a chance to know her well.”

He smiled. “You could say that. So can you please go on a date with me or should I ask Sylvia to ask you for me?”

I closed my car door and started the ignition. He looked at me in surprise. It felt good to have the upper hand even if for just a few minutes.

I rolled down the window and he smiled and began to lean towards me. “Tell Sylvia to call me. Bye, Tyrus.”

And with that I drove away. With a smile on my face, I thought to myself, I guess I wouldn’t be needing that refund.

Chapter Eight

The doorbell rang and I glanced at myself in the mirror. I hoped my wardrobe looked casual enough. I was wearing jeans and a t-shirt and had decided on no makeup. After all, I didn’t want my date to think he was special. The doorbell rang again and I slowly made my way to my front door.

I opened it and said, “You’re late.”

“I had to find parking,” he said, checking me out before surprising me by bringing me into his arms.

“Hey,” I said in false protest. It felt good to be in his arms again. I could smell the hint of his aftershave and the feel of him so close, just felt right. I wanted to wrap my arms around him and settle my head against his chest, but I wasn’t going to make it that easy for him.

So instead, I slapped at his hand and stepped out of his embrace.

He looked disappointed. “I can’t even get a hug?”

“You’re still in the doghouse, buddy,” I said as I stepped back into the house and he followed me.

I closed the door behind us and then turned around and marched past him towards my kitchen. “Come on, get to work,” I said pushing bowls and utensils towards him.

He looked confused. “I thought you were making dinner.”

“Then you misheard. Like I told Sylvia, you’re making dinner and I’m watching.”

He rolled up his sleeves. “Seems fair.”

I smiled. “Of course it does.”
