“Wait, don’t leave,” she said, as his image started to fade. “I have so much more to say. To ask you.”

“Lilly?” Blaze’s hand on her shoulder made her whirl around. “Who are you talking to?”

“It’s my father, Blaze. There, in the bonfire. Look.” She pointed to the fire, but the image of her father was gone.

“It’s been a long day, sweetheart, and I’m sure the burning herbs are making you heady. Let’s get you home.” He put his arm around her and headed toward the horses.

“You believe me, don’t you? I mean, I never thought I’d see a spirit in the fire, but I did. My father even spoke to me. He said he was sorry for the feud and that his brother was a fool.”

Blaze chuckled. “Well, that’s about right, I guess. However, I didn’t see any spirits. I think you’re overtired. Here, have a drink.” He handed her a flask made from deerskin.

“What is this?” she asked, peering into the cup. The strong aroma assaulted her nostrils, though the scent was more alluring than repulsive.

“Some things are better not to ask,” said Blaze with a grin.

“All right,” she said, drinking of the liquid, relaxing immediately. “Mmmm,” she said. “Not bad. It tastes like some kind of herbal wine.”

“My guess is exactly that.”

She took another big swig, gulping it down greedily.

“That’s enough,” he said, taking the wineskin away from her. “I have a feeling you will sleep well tonight.”

With his arm around her, Lillith leaned in to him, liking the warmth that was being shared between them. It felt so right to be with Blaze. There was no doubt in her mind that they belonged together.

“Aye,” she agreed, looking up and smiling. “I think I will have sweet dreams tonight. Thank you, Blaze.”
