Arrow leaned, relaxing against the back of the small leather chair. Kate remained still and stiff in front of the desk.

“My sister called to let me know your ideas are ‘cool,’ I swear that’s what she said.” He watched her to register some reaction. Kate didn’t know what to say.

“I just made a few suggestions.”

She thought she heard him sigh.

“Good. Can you bring me the Anderson file?”

That damn file again!

“Could you repeat that, please?”

“I’d like the Anderson file.” He said slowly, as if talking to a child.

“Anderson. He said Anderson.”

“Have you been drinking, by any chance?”

“No. I’ll be right back.”

Kate ran to the file room. She returned in not even two minutes and placed the file on the desk. The lawyer didn’t look up or say thank you. Kate stopped just outside the office, a foot from the door. She saw him grab the file and curse.

“Miss Donovan!” The shout was ear splitting, Kate realized he hadn’t realized she was already there.

“Here I am!” She said with mock innocence.

“I’m absolutely sure I didn’t ask you for that!” He slammed the clipboard down hard.

Kate took it calmly and instantly placed the correct file under his nose.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”

“I wanted it to immortalize the first moment I actually screwed up.”

Mark Arrow sharpened his gaze, Kate thought he looked amused.

“So, you still support the theory that your previous mistakes were not due to your carelessness, but to my carelessness.”

“Absolutely. This is the first time I’ve ever brought you the wrong file, and I did it on purpose.”

“Get the hell out of my office immediately.”

Kate suppressed a smile, but her eyes betrayed her.

“I didn’t admit anything!” The lawyer defended himself.

“I never expected that from you, sir.”

“I’m beginning to understand why you and my sister get along so well.” He mumbled as Kate walked out.
