I checked the test again. “Still positive. Okay.” My shoulders rolled forward until I dropped my elbows onto my knees. “Okay.”

PEYTON
I sat on the toilet seat for four full minutes taking deep breaths and pushing them out. Tears welled, and I pushed them down the way I’d been doing my entire life.
At the end of the four minutes, I wrapped up the test in the packaging, then in a huge wad of toilet paper, and shoved it down into the bottom of the trash.
Overkill, maybe, but I did not need the next person who walked in here to see that right away.
I washed my hands and patted my face to put color in my cheeks and sniffed once as I straightened my shoulders and unlocked the door.
Nothing on the other side of the door had changed.
I had. I wanted to smile but kept it contained because smiling for no reason was the kind of thing everyone would notice.
The feeling lingered, right under my sternum.
Underneath the ‘holy hell, what do I do now?’ was a warm, quiet feeling.
None of this was how I pictured it. None of it matched my version of the plan I’d loosely constructed in the back of my mind over the years.
And I couldn’t find it in myself to care.
I wanted this baby.
That was one thousand percent guaranteed.
Whatever came next, whatever the conversation unveiled about the men I shared a house with, I was having–and keeping–this baby.
Beneath the nerves and the fear, a completely immovable resolve settled.
I needed to tell them in a way that was more than a sentence dropped like a bomb that might cause the whole situation to implode.
I wanted to make is special for them, kind of test the waters in a way they didn’t expect.
I rounded the corner and walked straight into Elena.
Eyes wide, her whole face full of shock, she grabbed my arms and rocked us both back. “Peyton. There you are.” Her grip tightened.
“What’s wrong?”
“Mr. Petrov has been looking for you. He needs you in the parking garage. Right now.” Her grip turned painful.
I turned toward his office automatically. “The parking garage? But we just got to work. He’s in a meeting.” They were all in meetings.
Elena shook her head. “No. I mean, they were in meetings, but something happened. Misha left first, and then Leo found me.”
Hearing her call them by their first names rocked me to my core. “What did he say?”
“He said something happened to Misha. He needs you to meet him. Now. Parking garage. Level three.”
Level three. Where we had all started parking yesterday. Another why and the rampage of questions choked me. Leo needed me. “Is he okay?”
“I don’t know. Just go.” She pushed me toward the elevator.
I took off at a sprint, straight through the elevator doors.
