Thomas’s hands remained at his sides. She watched his jaw tighten once, as though control was a physical thing he had to hold in place. He did not look away. He did not pretend he was untouched by her.

“This is not impulse,” Eliza said quietly.

“No.”

“And not escape.”

“No.”

She tilted her head, studying him, letting herself read what he was without filtering it through what she believed she ought to accept.

“Then this is our choice,” she said.

“Yes,” Thomas answered, as if the word cost him something and he gave it anyway.

He drew a breath, slow and even, and lifted one hand. The movement was unhurried. Deliberate. A question made physical.

His fingertips brushed her cheek. Not the softest part, but the edge of bone, the line of her jaw, as though he was learning the boundaries of her face the way he learned the boundaries of the land.

His thumb rested lightly there.

Reverent.

Eliza did not retreat. She could feel the heat of his palm, the quiet steadiness of his touch, and the sensation traveled through her with a strange, unsettling calm.

This is what she had been refusing to name.

Not passion. Trust.

Thomas leaned closer, giving her every chance to turn away. Eliza did not move. She did not close her eyes yet. She held his gaze, and she felt the distance narrow until there was nothing left between them but breath.

Their lips met.

Softly. A single, deliberate press. Nothing searching. Nothing taken.

For an instant, Eliza forgot to breathe.

The world did not narrow so much as still. As though everything beyond the hedge had stepped back to allow the moment its space. She was aware of the warmth of him, the faint brush of his breath, the steadiness that had always marked him now close enough to feel.

When they parted, neither of them moved.

Thomas’s hand remained at her cheek, his thumb resting lightly along her jaw. He did not look away. He did not speak. His eyes held hers, dark and intent, as though he, too, were taking stock of something fragile and newly precious.

Eliza felt a quiet, unexpected lift in her chest. Not urgency. Not heat.

Wonder.

She had imagined this moment, she realized dimly. Not in detail. Not in form. But she had expected it to be louder somehow. More consuming.

Instead, it felt… right.

Thomas drew a slow breath. She felt it through him, the subtle shift of his body as he steadied himself. His hand lowered from her face, not reluctantly, but with care, as though setting something down that mattered.

They stood close enough now that stopping required attention.

Eliza let her fingers curl once, then still. She resisted the instinct to reach for him again, surprised by how difficult that small restraint already felt.

Thomas’s mouth curved faintly. Not a smile. Something quieter.
