“They don’t know that, and they sure as hell won’t believe you.”
“It’ll be fine.” I said the words, but I didn’t believe them. In my heart, I knew this view would be what I woke to every morning the rest of my life, however long that may be.
“There is an alternative.”
“Yeah?” I sighed, shaking my bangs off my brow. “What’s that?”
His hands settled on my hips, his body meshing with mine. Lowering his mouth to my ear, he whispered, “Stay. Stay with him, stay with me.”
A shudder had me tingling everywhere, my lids fluttering. He tucked a finger under my chin and craned my neck. My lips slightly parted, I gradually brought my sight up through my lashes. Wyatt stretched his neck and dipped low with a faint kiss.
Exhilaration heated my core, and it radiated outward, filling every nook and cranny of my being. Turning around, I held his neck, our tongues brushing together. A hand tangled in my hair, his arm linking behind my back to abruptly slam me to his chest. His head tipped, his tongue filling my mouth, our heads bobbing slowly.
Weakness set into my knees, a moan spilling from my throat. Desire thickening my blood, I was heady, the affect this man had over me hypnotic.
A door somewhere else in the house closed. Because it was so large and empty, the sound echoed.
Our lips broke apart suddenly, but we didn’t move otherwise. His gaze dark, our breaths mingling, his head twitched to reclaim my mouth. Hearing heels clicking on the hardwood floors in the hallway outside the bedroom, I stumbled away, panting slightly.
“Please, don’t do this,” I rasped, shaking my head. “I’m…I-I am so confused, Wyatt. And I am so goddamn scared.”
A sense of defeat and regret pulled his expression, his hands on his sides. Turning his profile to me, he huffed, his Adam’s apple jerking.
The realtor bounced down the steps with a bright grin on her hot pink lips. She batted her fake lashes when her blue contact slipped to reveal her brown iris beneath.
Creeped out, I quickly looked away, my lids rounded as I gawked at Wyatt, wondering if he saw that. By the way he pulled his lips between his mouth and turned his back to us, coughing, I would say he had.
“So, Ms. Monroe, what do you think of the home? It was a Queen Anne Victorian that was built in 1883, but the owners in 1910 did some renovations to give it the more Tudor style it has now. Have you been up to the third level, yet?”
I shook my head, my anxiety heightening again.
She motioned over her shoulder and said, “Well, let’s go look. It’s actually an entire one-bedroom apartment on its own with a full kitchen, office, living room, and a private rooftop deck. It’s remarkable.”
Tired and ready to go home, I waved my palm, shaking my head a second time. “It’s not necessary. I want to purchase it.”
Her face lit up, her smile widening to show all her teeth. Clasping her hands in front of her chest, she squealed, “Excellent. Why don’t you and your fiancé,” she said, motioning at Wyatt. “Follow me back to my—”
“I’m not her fiancé, I’m her bodyguard.”
She batted quickly, the smile now fake and plastered. Her voice tight, she cleared her throat and asked, “B-Bodyguard? What do you need a bodyguard for?”
His hands in his pockets, he strolled the room, checking the scenery. “Is that really necessary to know? Personally, if I were just a real estate agent, the last thing I would want to do was get too much information from someone who needed a bodyguard. The less you know, know what I mean?”
She was getting agitated, her complexion paling by the second. Tugging at the strand of pearls around her throat, she was dancing from foot to foot. “I ask only because I want to assure, I am not taking illegal money to sell this house.”
“Money’s money, lady.”
Clucking my teeth, I swatted at Wyatt. “He’s teasing. Don’t listen to him. He really has nothing better to do than be an ass. He is just my friend, that’s all.”
She damn near hit the floor the way her whole body rolled with her eyes in relief. Pushing a breath out with her tongue, she laughed and patted her chest. “That wasn’t nice to scare me like that.”
“So, we will follow you to your office,” I said, seeing his anger at my choice of words. What the hell did he want me to say? Yes, he is my bodyguard because my fiancé is in the mafia, but he’s also my lover? Was…was my lover. Was.
“That will be fantastic. You ready?”
“Mm hm.”
We followed her down the main set of stairs to the foyer and out the house. While she was locking up, we went to the truck and climbed inside.
