Not even permitted to leave the bed unless I had to use the bathroom or shower, the man was doting on me hand and foot. He brushed my hair, he put lotion on my skin, dressed me, bathed me, even painted my toenails last night.
I tugged at the comforter and lifted my foot, wiggling my toes and snickering at the horrible job.
He was just so damn cute about everything, reminding me of the side of my husband I adored and cherished.
When he strolled out of the closet this morning, wearing trousers and a designer shirt, my pulse raced with a mixture of relief and dread. He was finally going back to work. That meant no more hovering and I could finally explain to Wyatt what was going on.
Which meant telling him I was pregnant.
What if he came back, like he did last week, unexpectedly? A notion occurred to me, and I sat upright, tucking the blankets across my lap. “Milo?”
He was standing in front of the full-length mirror just past my vanity. His head tipped back, his sight down his nose, he was twisting a silk tie around to knot it just the way he liked it, with that one dip in the very center.
“What, baby?”
“So, I’ve been thinking. The other day, when you came home, I had no idea you were even in the house until I heard you yelling when I fainted.”
“Uh huh?”
“Well, it made me realize just how big this house really is.”
He snorted, flipping the longer length over the top. “That’s what made you realize it?”
“Yeah, and…and it got me to thinking it’s kinda scary, you know?”
Lifting his chin a little higher, he tucked the pointed end into the top of the knot and carefully jerked it down, readjusting the tightness around his neck.
“You aren’t wanting to downsize, are you? It’s far too soon to sell this place, baby. We’ll lose money.”
“No, no. I love this home too much to sell it. I was just thinking…well, with the baby coming and all, and little Rick already here, maybe we could get a security system put on the house.”
He smoothed the tie down his shirt and straightened his shoulders, making sure the length fell right at his belt buckle how he preferred.
“A security system?”
“Yeah, like the kind that sends you an alert to your phone if a door opens, or something. I could get notified immediately.”
He plucked his jacket from the dolly next to the mirror and eased it over his arms gracefully, shrugging his shoulders so the material fell into place perfectly. Turning around to face me, his brows were furrowed as he approached the bed. “You really that worried?”
“Well, we have one baby in the house.” I couldn’t help but grin, petting my belly. “And another on the way.”
He absolutely beamed ear to ear, proud as I had ever seen. Sitting on the edge of the mattress, he bent over and scattered kisses all over my stomach.
I sighed, raking my fingers through his hair. “I might be acting silly, but mamma bear mode is kicking in and I’m feeling overly protective.”
He sat up and kissed me, holding my stare. “If it gives you peace of mind, we’ll do it. Do you need me to make calls?”
“No, that’s okay. I know you have a lot of catching up to do from this week. I’ll handle it.”
“You sure?”
“Yeah.”
He planted another quick kiss to my lips, then my belly before standing. “All right, baby girl. If you need any help, just ask Wyatt. He knows about that shit better than me, anyway.”
“Like how?”
“Like there hasn’t been a system yet the man hasn’t been able to crack and shut down when I needed to get in somewhere someone else didn’t want me in.”
