Unfortunately.

“Okay,” I say, releasing a slow breath.

My head tilts back and so does Creed’s. We both stare at the rising sun.

Geez. An all-fucking-nighter.

I tear my gaze from the sky and let it drift between the Veilatara, V, and my men.

“What now?” I ask.

I simply don’t know what the fuck to do.

“Now, we go home,” Amick says. “You take a shower, then sleep.”

“Just me?” I ask. “What do you plan on doing?”

He lifts my hand until he lays his lips against my knuckles.

“I won’t be able to sleep and if all of us suddenly disappear from the Godsdawn for the day, that’s going to raise Ellian’s worries and seem suspicious. I’m going to carry on with my day as normal, while you and the others rest.”

My head shakes despite the exhaustion weighing on me.

“No. If you’re going forward with your day, so are we. We need to meet with the others anyway if they haven’t gone to bed already.”

“Ugh. Fuck,” Riven groans dramatically as he stands and offers me his hand. “I want this gods-forsaken night to end.”

Same.

“The night has ended,” Amick corrects.

He’s right…the sun’s rising.

This new beginning feels so much more daunting.

I’ve waited my entire life, read countless books, dug as deep as I could into ancient texts to learn everything about the God of Boundaries.

My fascination with him began the day at my father’s house when I laid my hand against that stone that showed me the truth of their quarrel.

Now, leaning against the shower frame, studying the daughter he left behind twenty years ago, I find I couldn’t care less about him. Sure, I’d still like to pick his brain, but the fact he’s causing the love of my life emotional distress weighs far heavier than anything I could learn from him.

She should get her answers long before I get mine.

It’s been two minutes and she hasn’t turned, moved, run her hands through her hair or down her skin. She stands under the spray, none the wiser that I’m here.

I’m not sure how long she’s been like this. She didn’t come with us to check if Yemi and the others had gone to bed. She told us to check on them, ask them to come to our house, then carried on through her back door.

Unlike my brothers, who went to their rooms to shower and get ready quickly once we returned, I stood at the edge of my bed, stared around, then came here to her. The sensations flowing across her soul aren’t strained, exactly, but they aren’t pleasant either.

One after the other, I kick off my shoes and begin undressing. By the time I pull my shirt over my head and open my eyes again, they collide with Thayla’s and her small, playful smile.

“Sneaking up on me, Candyman?”

“I’ve been in here for minutes now, Mysenta. You’re only just noticing.”
