“Yeah. Make sure you give me an update on lil man. And I’m serious, Paisley. Soon as the doctor comes in, call me.”

“No. I’m not telling you shit because you could literally come with us to the hospital.”

He looked past me at the driver and tilted his head, signaling for him to close the door.

The driver hesitated and looked at me real quick like he ain’t want no parts of it, then reached past me and closed the door.

I went inside and gathered a few of Rah Jr.’s things. Enough clothes, an extra pair of shoes, wipes, and whatever else I could think of because he had already thrown up on himself once, and I wanted to make sure I could get him changed and cleaned up if it happened again.

The whole time I was moving through that house, I was pissed. It was one thing for PB to mention that I needed to leave. It was a whole other thing for him to actually say he was gone start making calls tomorrow.

I sucked my teeth and did what I had to do because, at the end of the day, I was a mommy first.

“Aww, Mommy’s baby. I know you don’t feel good.” I kissed the top of his little head and put his bag on my shoulder. “Let’s get you to the hospital.”

Then I walked right back out of the house and had another driver take us to the hospital in a different truck.

The whole ride, though, my blood was boiling. Ain’t no telling what I was gonna do.

We pulled up to my mom’s house and sat in the back seat of the black truck for a moment.

“Give us a second,” Ozy told his driver before turning toward me.

I shifted in my seat, feeling uneasy, but not in a bad way. I was just nervous. He was finally about to meet his daughter, and even though I knew why we were here, actually sitting outside my mom’s house made it feel different.

Before either of us could really say anything, the front door opened.

My mom stood in the doorway with a big smile on her face. She cupped her hands around her mouth like we were all the way down the street.

“Come on out that car and come on up in here!”

I laughed, looking over at Ozy. “By the way, my mom is a trip.”

“I’m not trippin’ ’bout it.” He let out a laugh.

His driver got out and opened my door, then jogged around the truck to open Ozy’s. Once we were both out, we walked up the driveway together.

My heart was doing that same little thing it always did whenever I was nervous, beating entirely too damn fast. I tried to get myself together before we reached the door, but it wasn’t working.

I walked up to my mama and gave her a hug, and she squeezed me a little too tight, the way she did when she had something to say. She kissed me on my cheek and then looked over my shoulder.

“So, this must be your baby daddy.”

I pulled back and gave her a look.

“What?” she said, all innocent. “He’s your baby daddy, isn’t he?”

Ozy laughed behind me. He came up the last step and extended his hand to her. “Hi. I’m Ozyris.”

“I know who you are…you’re that singer. Uh, Ozy Loverboy, right?”

I placed my hand over my face.

“It’s actually Ozy Love, ma’am,” he corrected her with a laugh.

“Oh, sorry. Close enough.” She chuckled. “And don’t call me ma’am. You can call me Miss Carolyn, or you know what? You can even call me Ma.”

Instead of shaking his hand, she reached for a hug. He leaned down and hugged her, and I stood there waiting for her to finish embarrassing me.
