His violet eyes brighten with interest. "Explain."

"Orthani has always been restless under distant rule from Vhoig. Local lords resent edicts from nobles who've never walked their lands or understood their concerns." The political implications crystallize as I speak. "But Alaric has spent decades managing those estates. He knows every village leader, every merchant family, every local dispute. His authority comes from competence, not birthright."

"And Aurelia?"

"Will win their hearts within a season." Pride fills my voice when speaking of my sister's gifts. "She understands people instinctively. Combined with Alaric's practical knowledge and her diplomatic talents, House Ardyn will become Orthani's strongest ally rather than its reluctant overseer."

Grymlock nods slowly, the strategic wisdom apparent in his expression. "A family governing from genuine connection rather than inherited obligation. Yes, that does serve my interests far better than another noble house treating distant lands as sources of taxation."

The conversation settles into comfortable silence as both of us contemplate the broader implications. Through the pristine windows, evening shadows lengthen across the palace gardens, reminding me that duties await beyond these walls.

Yet something fundamental has shifted during our discussion. The King's earlier praise, his paternal concern, and now this strategic conversation have illuminated a truth I've been too blind to see. Becoming a great lord shouldn't require abandoning everything I value—it should mean protecting what matters most.

"Your Majesty." I rise from my chair, bowing respectfully. "By your leave."

"Go well, Caelric. Give my regards to your family."

The walk home feels different than my earlier journey to the palace. Each step carries new understanding rather than the weight of sacrifice. House Vaerith's strength has never come from rigid adherence to tradition—it comes from our willingness to choose loyalty over convenience, love over political expedience.

Perhaps there's wisdom in remembering that.

I arrive at House Vaerith to find the family gathered in the main sitting room, their voices carrying the particular mixture of excitement and melancholy that accompanies major transitions. Aurelia and Alaric stand near the fireplace, her hand resting gently on his arm as they face the assembled siblings.

"—departure will be gradual," Alaric is explaining, his calm voice carrying easily across the room. "The Orthani estates require immediate attention, but we'll maintain connections here until the transition is complete."

Nerina sits curled in her favorite chair, platinum hair cascading over one shoulder like liquid moonlight. Her luminous eyes hold unshed tears despite her composed expression.

"So I'm to be left with nothing but brothers?" she asks, attempting lightness that doesn't quite mask her distress. "How wonderfully barbaric."

Aurelia laughs, crossing the room to perch on the arm of Nerina's chair. "As if distance could keep me away from you. I'll visit so frequently that Alaric will begin questioning whether he married me or adopted the entire family."

"That's precisely what I'm afraid of," Emeric mutters from the windows, though his grin betrays genuine affection.

I step into the room, drawing everyone's attention. Alaric's violet eyes meet mine directly, and I see the same steady composure that has impressed me throughout this entire ordeal.

"Alaric." I approach him with measured steps, aware that this moment carries weight for both our families. "I'm glad the investigation found no evidence linking you to any conspiracy."

His shoulders straighten slightly, though his expression remains calm. "Thank you."

"But understand something clearly." I hold his gaze, allowing steel to enter my voice. "Aurelia is beloved by every member of this family. Nothing would stop us from protecting her."

The room falls silent, tension crackling between us like the moment before lightning strikes. Alaric doesn't flinch, doesn't look away, doesn't offer empty reassurances or political platitudes. Instead, he steps closer, matching my intensity with quiet certainty.

"Nothing would stop me from protecting my wife, either."

The satisfaction from Alaric's response settles something restless in my chest. He understands what Aurelia means to us, and more importantly, he shares that protective instinct rather than resenting it.

"Good." I extend my hand toward him, and he clasps it firmly. "Then we understand each other perfectly."

The tension breaks as Nerina rises from her chair with fluid grace, moving to embrace both Aurelia and Alaric simultaneously.

"Well, now that the men have finished their territorial display," she says, platinum hair cascading around all three of them, "perhaps we can focus on more important matters. Like how often I'm allowed to visit without causing a diplomatic incident."

Aurelia laughs, the sound bright and warm despite the melancholy underlying our gathering. "As often as you like. I'll need allies in navigating Orthani society."

"Allies?" Emeric's crimson eyes glint with mischief from the windows. "Nerina will conquer half their nobility within a fortnight. The other half will spend their time composing terrible poetry about her eyes."

"How wonderfully predictable," Nerina sighs, though her smile betrays genuine amusement.
