My blood chills. "What did he say exactly?"

"Nothing specific. Just meaningful glances and carefully phrased questions about whether House Vaerith might benefit from... alternative arrangements." Her voice drops to a whisper. "We have vultures circling, Caelric. And we still have no idea who's been feeding them information."

The weight of failure presses against my heart like a stone. Weeks of investigation, countless leads pursued, and we're no closer to identifying the architect behind this conspiracy than when we started. Every financial trail ends with intermediaries. Every suspicious conversation leads to more questions. Meanwhile, the wedding proceeds as scheduled, political alliances shift like quicksand, and I've managed to destroy the one genuine relationship that brought me any peace.

"Keep smiling," Aurelia murmurs as another wave of guests approaches. "We can't afford to show weakness now."

I paste on the appropriate expression while internally cataloguing everything we've lost—Lord Ardyn, political stability, Aurelia's freedom, and the woman whose absence feels like missing a limb.

Perhaps this is what becoming Lord Vaerith truly costs. Perhaps leadership requires sacrificing everything that makes life worth living.

The thought tastes like nimiscu and sounds suspiciously like cowardice dressed in noble rhetoric.

ROSALIE

The emerald silk catches the morning light streaming through the preparation chamber's tall windows, transforming Aurelia into something ethereal. I smooth the final wrinkle from her train, marveling at how the deep green brings out the violet in her eyes.

"You were absolutely right about the color," I murmur, adjusting the delicate embroidery along her sleeves. "The green is stunning. Much better than the silver."

Aurelia turns slightly, catching my reflection in the ornate mirror. "Perhaps you can wear the silver at your wedding."

I force my hands to remain steady as I continue fussing with her train, though my chest feels hollow.

"I don't see myself getting married in any part of the future."

The admission tastes bitter. Marriage requires someone willing to fight for you, to choose you over duty and political convenience. Someone who doesn't retreat behind formal politeness the moment real courage becomes necessary.

"Rosalie, about what I said about you and—"

The music swells beyond the chamber doors, strings and horns weaving together in the traditional wedding processional. Aurelia's words disappear beneath the melody's crescendo, and I step back.

"It's time." I smooth my simple blue dress—the same one I always wear because it's the only formal gown I possess—and move toward the doors. "You look magnificent."

I nod to the liveried doormen stationed on either side of the entrance. Their white gloves grip the ornate handles as they pull the massive doors open in perfect synchronization.

The great hall transforms before my eyes into something from a fairy tale. Hundreds of floating candles drift through the air like captured stars, their flames dancing without wind or wavering. Gossamer silks in silver and emerald drape from the vaulted ceiling, creating an canopy that seems to breathe with each musical note. Even the air itself appears touched by magic—tiny motes of light drift between the guests like suspended diamonds.

Flowers cascade from every surface. White roses climb the marble columns in living spirals, while emerald vines heavy with silver blooms wind through the floating silks above. The fragrance mingles jasmine and moonflower, creating something intoxicating and otherworldly.

The music shifts, becoming something transcendent. Voices join the instruments—not visible singers, but harmonies that seem to emerge from the very stones of House Vaerith itself. The melody wraps around each guest, transforming the ceremony into something sacred.

I've attended noble gatherings before, but nothing approaches this magnificence. This isn't merely a wedding—it's art made manifest, beauty given form and substance.

Aurelia glides forward into this wonderland, her emerald gown trailing behind her like liquid silk. Every eye follows her progress down the petal-strewn aisle, but she moves with serene dignity despite sacrificing her freedom for political necessity.

At the altar, Alaric waits in formal midnight blue, his expression mixing wonder and gratitude. Beside him stands Caelric in his role as family representative, tall and commanding in ceremonial black and silver.

My heart clenches at the sight of him, so close yet impossibly distant. He doesn't look my way—hasn't looked my way since his father's ultimatum transformed love into liability.

The ceremony begins, and I retreat to my designated corner, watching the most beautiful wedding I've ever witnessed while my own heart breaks in silence.

The temple clergy step forward as Aurelia and Alaric join hands at the altar, their ceremonial robes shimmering with embedded silver thread. The eldest priest raises his arms, and I watch in wonder as blessing spells cascade from his fingertips like liquid starlight.

"By ancient covenant and sacred bond," his voice carries through the hall without amplification, "let these houses unite."

The flowers adorning every surface burst into renewed bloom. White roses unfurl their petals in slow motion while emerald vines sprout fresh silver blossoms that seem to pulse with inner light. The fragrance intensifies, wrapping around us like a benediction.
