Everything between them felt both comfortable and new as he teased out each moan and touch from her. He was the same man she’d come to know so well, but it was she who’d changed.
Like their first night, using the cover of masks to enhance the freedom to do whatever they wanted, so did knowing this was their last time together.
She didn’t hold anything back. She gave him everything. Their bodies fused into a tangle of limbs and kisses. Their gazes held tight to the other, watching every response. Not wanting to miss a single reaction.
Greedily storing away every memory for a time when they were apart.
“I don’t think I’ll ever have my fill of you,” he whispered as their bodies joined together. The same intensity as all the times before, yet even more acute because it was the last time.
She replied with like words, though she couldn’t recall exactly what she’d said.
They moved together slowly, drawing out each sensation. Taking and giving. Growing and expanding until, together, they reached the pinnacle of their desires.
As they lay together in replete exhaustion, random thoughts trickled through her mind. How much she didn’t want this to end.
Kit leaned up to look at her, his eyes more serious than she’d ever seen.
“Celia.”
“Please don’t ask me to marry you. I fear if you do, I’ll say yes and it will most likely be wonderful, but I will always miss the freedom I feel right now.”
“Then we’ll continue as planned and return to London as friends.”
“Yes.”
“Wife or no, I will always respect your wishes.”
She knew that was true. She could trust him. And perhaps it would not feel stifling to be his wife. But still…
“Stay with me tonight, Celia. Tomorrow we’ll go back to what must be, but for tonight let us pretend that this is how it will always be.”
There was only one answer. “Yes.”
