Susan brought out her phone. Bravery warred with caution. This was all still so new. And James could be so serious … maybe she should give him some time.

But he wrote first.

He wanted to know what I was doing.

Dare I tell him?

She wrote quickly, sending the two messages one after the other, before she could change her mind.

I’m at the Siren’s Call.

I hope you didn’t expect us to remain a secret.

She waited with bated breath.

One second went by.

Two seconds.

Susan started to wonder if she’d made a huge mistake.

Three messages flashed in quick succession

I would call you, except I’m still in the office, and the Assistant Director is here.

No more secrets.

I’ve already told the AD I won’t be going undercover anymore.

Susan’s breath hitched.

That was a big change.

What? Shouldn’t we talk about this?

It’s Saturday tomorrow. I’ll be there before lunch. But you should know where I stand. Have fun, sweetheart. Tell your friends I said hi.

Susan dropped her phone in her pocket.

One more night.

She could wait one more night.

When she looked up from her phone, Natalie and Jessy were smiling from ear to ear.

“So. What was that about?”

“I guess there’s more to Ramsay than meets the eye,” Natalie said.

“What’s going on with Ramsay?” Rob asked, coming up to them, one arm around his fiancée, Emma. Susan knew James had been instrumental in finding Emma when she’d been kidnapped by a serial killer and held in the forest.

“You may be seeing a lot more of him, is all,” Jessy piped up.

Susan blushed.

Was she really ready for everybody to know?

“Really? Is the FBI opening an office in Sharp’s Cove?”
