“So, he saved Evelyn because she looked like his daughter but why fake his death?”
“Arthur got hungry for power and he knew that if he sent Evelyn to Roz, she would train her and eventually Evelyn would go after the men that killed little Ellie and thus the men who had also killed his own daughter and free him to start his own operation. He always blamed Fuentes for the accident whether it was true or not I don’t know?”
“How do you know this?”
“Because Arthur is Osiris!” Pax held his eyes as she dropped the bombshell.
Alex felt a haze of red fall over his eyes as he tried to get a handle on his fury. His hands clenched and he felt a ringing in his ears. “And you’re only sharing this now?” He barely managed to suppress his desire to wring her neck.
“Because I wasn’t sure until fifteen minutes ago. I had hoped he wouldn’t be there tonight, but our intel tells me he will be. Although that could change any minute.”
“Fuck.” He spun on his heel and paced as he tried to figure out if they should abort the mission.
“So, you’ve known who Osiris was all along and didn’t tell us?”
“Zenobi doesn’t owe you anything.”
“No, but last I looked Evelyn was Zenobi and she deserves more than all of you lying to her.” He knew the verbal blow had struck when Pax winced, but he didn’t care.
“You’re right. We do owe her more, but you have to understand. Evelyn loved David or Arthur or whatever the fuck he calls himself, and it would break her heart to know he betrayed and used her.”
“And what the fuck do you think it will do when she finds out you, Roz, and everyone else did?”
“We wanted to protect her.”
“Yeah well, good fucking job.” He snarled as a knock sounded, interrupting them.
“Come on, Shadow, time to go.” Liam poked his head in and looked between them with a question in his eyes that Alex ignored.
“Yeah, give me two minutes.”
“Sure.” Liam closed the door behind him.
“So now what?”
Alex advanced towards her as she held her ground. He bent closer and, in a voice so filled with ice it was a wonder the room didn’t freeze, spoke, “Now we go and pray like fuck that Evelyn doesn’t spot him because if she does and something happens to her nothing on earth will stop me from finding you. When I do, you will all pay for betraying her.” He forced himself to turn and walk out while he still could.
As he moved towards Evelyn, she looked at him. He could see the worry in her eyes which he hated, so he plastered a fake smile on his face and kissed her to distract them both. The kiss was hard and filled with passion and anger and she took it, instantly making him feel better as he poured his fear into the kiss before pulling away.
“Everything okay?” Her eyes went to Pax who had walked out behind him.
He turned and looked at Pax hating her for dragging him into this and making him lie to Evelyn. “Yes, just a minor detail Pax wanted to share.”
“About?” He could see suspicion peek through the question.
“I’ll tell you later. It’s nothing important.”
She regarded him for a minute and then nodded. “Let’s go then.” Evelyn took his hand in hers and led the way to the cars.
