Alex heard him pacing his office and could imagine the scowl on his face.
“That about sums it up,” Alex replied unhappily. “Who knew about the meeting?”
“Everyone. I wanted everyone prepped in case we needed to move on something. What about Evelyn?”
Alex stilled. “What about her?”
“Did she call anyone?”
Alex felt his body go solid. “She spoke to Roz on her way to the meet but nothing before that.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.” He could barely get the word out his teeth were clenched so tightly together.
“How?”
“Because I am,” he returned not wanting to tell Jack about the art studio he had made for a woman he wasn’t even sure he would ever see again.
“But she could have slipped away, made a call without you knowing.”
A part of Alex knew why Jack was reluctant to believe his men were behind this, he got it he really did, but he wasn’t having Evelyn used as the scapegoat. He would die for his team, but he would sell his soul for the woman he loved. “I’m telling you, Evelyn is not the leak.” His calm control seemed to get through to Jack.
“Then we need to find out who it is and fast.”
Alex heard the sigh Jack let out and felt for his boss. “Have you spoken to Roz?” Alex knew that while Jack might like Evelyn, he and Roz had a very contentious relationship.
“No, she’s ignoring my calls.” His frustration with Roz’s lack of communication clear through the phone. “Honestly, I have no idea how Kanan hasn’t strangled her yet.”
Alex ignored the reference to Roz’s husband and the state of their marriage, wanting to concentrate on the matter at hand. “I need Will to pull the CCTV from the Louvre and the street where the bomb was planted. Liam and Blake are checking into Colchester. Evelyn and Reid are going through the thumb drive Colchester gave us. Last I heard Roz was trying to find this auction and get Evelyn or one of her girls on the invite list.”
“Let me know as soon as you have any intel from the thumb drive,” Jack demanded. “I’ve managed to convince the Palace to let us handle Evelyn and find the secret they don’t want exposed to the world. I gave them my personal guarantee that she’s not behind this so if she is, it’s my balls for the chop! Right now, I’m going to go through everyone’s movements with a fine-toothed comb and find that traitorous fuckwit.”
“You know, it might be an idea to bring Fortis Security in on this. Zack may be able to look at it objectively and more covertly than us.”
Zack Cunningham was the millionaire owner of Fortis Security and an ex-SAS Commander. He and Jack went way back and anybody that knew him and his team, knew they were the best in the business. They had worked side by side with Fortis on a fair few missions and Alex was confident that Zack could be trusted to help them now.
Plus, he was Will’s boss and Roz’s husband’s best friend. He had connections to them but could still maintain a degree of distance.
“Maybe, but with Ava due any day it doesn’t seem like the right time.”
Zack’s wife Ava was indeed due to give birth to their second child any day now and Zack was reportedly driving everyone crazy with his fussing. Alex imagined what he would be like if he was ever lucky enough to see Evelyn heavy with his child and decided that Zack was right—childbirth was terrifying, and planning was everything.
“Well, whatever you decide just know you have my full support.”
“Thanks, Alex,” Jack replied and hung up.
Alex took a second to school his features not wanting Reid to pick up on anything. For the first time since he’d started at Eidolon, he had to hide from the very people he trusted to have his back and all while trying to keep the woman he loved from being executed.
