Chapter Eleven

Evelyn came awake slowly, her head foggy, but a warm comfortable feeling pervaded her body. She knew exactly where she was—nestled into Alex’s warm body. She should feel embarrassed. Her body was pressed into his, her leg thrown over his hips pinning his body with her own, but she didn’t. It had always been easy with Alex. They shared a connection that was older than they were. It felt as if they had been together in a previous life and finding each other in this one, had just picked up where they left off.

She grinned at her silly thoughts but still couldn’t deny them. The way he had comforted her and allowed her to get almost everything out while he’d held her—not interrupting or questioning just letting her tell her story and then forgiving her as if it hadn’t cost him—was pure Alex.

She felt his body move beneath her and knew he was awake when he ran a strong hand over her naked thigh.

“Never thought I would have this again.” His voice, sexy-hoarse with sleep and feeling, caused her to shiver.

“Me either,” she admitted looking into his warm hazel eyes, the quirk on his lips showing her he was happy. His was tousled even though he couldn’t have moved far with her laying on him. His head bent to hers and his mouth touched hers in a soft kiss that had her belly going heavy and her clit start pulsing.

“What happened after you went on the run?”

She had known he would ask. Alex was smart, the smartest man she knew, and he also knew her better than anyone even now. “David,” she said. The affection she felt for David wasn’t lost on Alex if the way he stilled was anything to go by. “He helped me get settled in the UK. I wanted Paris but he said it was too close to you and I couldn’t take the risk.” Alex rubbed her thigh in a comforting gesture which was far from comforting.

“I went to college and finished my education and was attending Art School at The University of Arts in London. I was in my final year when they found me again.”

His hand stopped moving, his body going preternaturally still under her. “Who found you?”

“Fuentes’s men. David warned me and helped me get away. He took me to his chalet in Courchevel and kept me safe,” she said wistfully.

“You loved him?”

“Yes, I did, but not like you think. He was a lot older than me. He was almost fifty and became like a father to me. He had lost his family in a skiing accident years before and his job had become everything to him. I reminded him of his daughter.”

“What happened to him?”

“He died of bone cancer two years after saving me for the second time. Before he died, he put me in touch with Roz. He wanted me to be able to protect myself and had come into contact with Roz before and knew she would do that. When he died, I trained every day with her until I became Siren. I went back to Miami and killed the two men who had murdered little Ellie—that was the name of the little girl they murdered. Afterwards, I stayed on with Roz because I never wanted anyone else to end up running all the time like I had. Plus, I was damn good at it and it paid well.”

“And yet after all that you’re still my Evelyn,” he murmured as he turned and rolled into her taking her to her back.

She looked up at him cataloguing his handsome features. He really could be on the cover of Vogue with his looks and contemplated what he said and then shook her head. “No, that Evelyn is a ghost.”

“No, she isn’t. I see her, and I never stopped loving her.”

Her breath caught painfully in her throat as her heart seemed to miss a beat. “How can you? You don’t even know me now?” She was terrified of letting him see the joy his words brought her, scared to hope he meant it.

“Yes, I do. I know you care too much. I know you still wrinkle your nose when you’re uncertain. I know you hurt easily. I may not know everything, but I know what is in here.” He tapped her chest above her heart. “I can learn what is in here,” he said tapping her temple gently.

“We are different now, Alex. Those kids that had it all planned are gone, we grew up. Both of us headed down paths we never would have chosen because of me.” Anger rose with the injustice of it all.

“Not because of you, mi nena,” he said in a low, dangerous voice.

“Yes, because I was fool enough to hang out by the river that night, poking my nose in, and choosing a dead stranger over you,” she said with a catch in her voice.

“That wasn’t your fault.”

She pushed at his chest, anger flaring when it didn’t move. “Of course, it was.”

He growled in response. “You’re pissing me off now, Evelyn.”

“Oh, well, you’ll get over it.”

They glared at each other and then just like in times past they both burst out laughing.

“You’re a pain in my ass.” He chuckled as he kissed her, and she let him, loving the tingle that shot through her body at his kiss.

She realised as he pulled back that he had manoeuvred her so that he was lying between her thighs with his hard cock pressed against her. “Seriously, Alex. I don’t want you to suddenly realise in a few months or a year that you don’t love me still and it was hormones or rose-tinted glasses. I couldn’t take that.”
