Chapter Nine
As Alex dragged a somewhat stunnedEvelyn behind him through the quiet street of Bon Marche, he had exactly one thing on his mind. To get her home, make her talk, and then fuck her until she didn’t have the strength to leave him again. His plan was thwarted about five hundred yards from his doorstep when his phone rang followed two seconds later by Evelyn’s phone going off.
It could either be very good or very bad, but one thing was clear, it was an interruption he could not ignore. No matter how much his body wanted him to. Keeping hold of her hand even as she tried to pull it away, he took out his phone and noted it was Jack. Deciding to call him back once they were inside and off the street, he hit ignore and watched as Evelyn did the same.
They rode the elevator in silence, her hand tucked in his, their bodies only a breath apart. The tiny space filled with the sexual tension radiating from them. The door opened and he stepped out, pulling her into his front, so her breasts were plastered against his chest. His hand lifted and sifted through her hair to cradle her nape as his thumb caressed her jaw.
“This is happening,” he said, then slanted his mouth over hers in a kiss that held passion, anger, and a sweetness he hadn’t expected. She didn’t fight him but kissed him back, her hand moving over his chest and into his hair as she gave him everything he needed. Hearing his phone ring again he reluctantly pulled away, the sweet taste of her still on his lips as he held her hooded eyes with his own and answered the call without breaking eye contact.
“Yes?”
“Where the fuck have you been and why the hell didn’t you answer your phone?” Jack demanded, the urgency in his tone suggesting something had happened.
“I took Evelyn to see some friends,” he responded as calmly as he could considering his body was still thinking about the filthy things he wanted to do to the woman in front of him.
“This isn’t a fucking jolly. We have serious problems. If you want a day trip with friends, do it another time.”
“Tell me,” Alex demanded.
He could hear Jack take a deep calming breath before he spoke again. “My source tells me they believe Evelyn has taken a file that contains evidence about Princess Caitlin. They don’t want it getting into the public domain.”
“Shit! I take she isn’t the Queen’s granddaughter?” Alex guessed.
For the Palace to be after Evelyn like they were, it had to be something bad. A princess that wasn’t really a princess was as bad as it got.
“They wouldn’t say, but they want it back and they want Evelyn gone. I did manage to convince them that we believe there’s been a misunderstanding and they have agreed if it’s returned and Ms Garcia hands herself in for questioning, they will consider the matter closed.”
“You and I both know that’s bullshit. If they think Evelyn knows something she might go in for questioning, but she won’t come out. At least not alive.” He saw Evelyn wince at his words and cursed his bluntness then for speaking aloud.
“I know, so we need to find out who really stole it and why they are setting up Evelyn.”
“Any other leads?” Alex asked and twisted towards the window letting go of Evelyn when her phone rang.
“No, but I’m waiting on a call from Mitch. You need to do some digging and establish every enemy she has. There must be something in her background we can’t find. There’s an entire five-year period where Evelyn Garcia is missing from every database known to man. I have Will helping us out. He’s hacking some of the alphabet agencies to see if he can find her.”
“Okay. Call me when you have something.”
“Yeah, yeah and answer your fucking phone next time.” Jack said and hung up.
Alex turned to see Evelyn had walked towards the window but was murmuring on her phone with her head bent as she tucked her free hand in her pocket. He needed to force her to open up and tell him why she had disappeared. It was all linked, he was sure of it.
Just as he was about to step towards her the glint of a lens bounced off the early afternoon light across the road. He had a split second to shout a warning as he dove across the room at her and tackled her to the ground as a bullet hit the glass of his doors and pinged off.
Rolling off her he saw the shocked look on her face turn to fury as she looked at his sliding doors.
“Bulletproof,” he stated as he grabbed her hand and pulled her to her feet, dragging her to the hallway where there were no windows. “Follow me.” He walked to the end of the hallway and what should be the linen cupboard but contained his gun safe. Using the thumb on his right hand he unlocked it and handed her a Colt AR-15 semi-automatic and two cartridges.
He picked up his favoured C8 CQB with flash suppressor and tucked a Glock 17 into his jeans before heading back to the living room. “We need to stay here. This place is a fortress, but I want you fully loaded just in case.”
“We can’t just leave them out there!” The affront on her face at the suggestion they hide caused his lips to twitch. Despite being under attack he could still hear her attitude and sweet anger, making him smile despite himself. “Alex,” she demanded, a frown on her face.
“I have no intention of leaving them anywhere. Liam, Blake, and Reid are covering us so any second now they will…” His voice trailed off as he cocked his ear hearing return gunfire coming from outside.
Within moments silence rent the air and Alex waited a few more minutes before his phone rang. He slid the call button and put it to his ear as he watched an expectant Evelyn. “Alex.”
“Tango’s are down. Two dead, one alive. What do you want to do with them?” Liam asked his cockney twang for once subdued.
“I’ll put a call into Jack for a clean-up team but take the live one to the garages. I want a word with him.”
