Around it, stars warp, buckle, or flicker out.

I sit stiller than I ever have.

By the Void Devils, let me have one moment more.

Just one.

Freya’s thigh is warm against mine. Daire has wrapped one wing around me and the other around Freya like he can shelter us both.

He can’t.

My heart should be racing, but when it comes to the end, I am frozen in the face of this nightmare.

I have already made my decision.

There is a calmness in knowing that I alone can stop the end of the world.

And all it will cost is my life.

What is that worth anyway?

The crack in the heavens spreads wider like a fanged maw suspended between the Void Pyramids. I feel dizzy looking into it because there is no bottom to it, only an abyss and vast currents of shadows.

For a moment, I think that I can smell the scent of extinguished suns.

Daire grabs my chin.

His fingers press harshly into my skin, as he drags my gaze away from the mesmerizing sight.

His eyes are wild, while he forces me to look at him. “I said that I trusted you, bastard. But now, the world is cracking apart. This is more than the Blood Moon ritual. Damn your fangs, what the fuck is going on?”

“The Void Devils are breaking through the veil,” I reply, “to devour our world.”

CHAPTER NINE

Void Pyramids, Blood Kingdom

“You knew that these assholes were coming tonight to devour us.” Freya’s eyes are blazing with fury and fear. “Who has been hiding the largest secret now, huh?”

“Is it a contest?” Daire mutters like a guilty fae who knows that he’d win.

My gaze sharpens, as I scrutinize him.

Interesting.

He lets go of my chin, harshly shoving me back.

I rub across my reddened skin, lingering over where his fingers have marked me. “Not devour us if I can stop them. My dears, I shall only allow them to devour me.”

“Oh well, that’s so much better.” Freya hurls a cushion at me, and I dodge.

I didn’t realize that Omegas enjoyed destroying and throwing things around in their nests as much as Alphas do. I should have supplied even more cushions for Freya.

“Whatever ugly bastards are about to fly through that bloody great rift in the sky,” Daire gestures up at the night sky between the three pyramids, where shadows are now rotating around the widening tear, dragging wisps of starlight into the abyss, “they can’t eat you. We’re married, and as much as I don’t normally mind sharing in a kinky way, not on my wedding night.”

He bares his fangs and widens his wings like his courting display, impressive as it is, will be enough to scare off the Void Devils.
