“Would you?” I hand my phone over for him to add her number.

“Yeah, she’s been talking about getting you involved. It’ll be good for you too,” Lachlan explains, typing in her number before handing it back.

“Thank you.”

He shakes my hand before leaving. I waste no time in touching base with her, immediately dialing. Surely keeping busy will help.

“Maisyn.”

“Hey, it’s Walker Pennington.”

“Oh, hey, Walker. Good to hear from you.” Maisyn’s voice is low.

“I’m sorry to bother you. Do you have a minute?”

“I do. Let me step out,” she tells me, her voice growing louder. “I’m hoping this is a good call.”

“Well, I was hoping we could talk about the group in need of legal help.”

“Yes. Lloyd and Woods Family Resource. It’s a place for families in crisis. Some need legal advice, counseling, or even representation for separation and divorces,” she explains.

“So, it’s Lea and One’s center. All right, I’d be happy to help.” I pause. “When can I start?”

“Killer,” she exclaims. “Tonight? Be there around five.”

“That works.”

“I’ll wait out front and show you around,” Maisyn offers.

“Sounds great. See ya then.”

“No problem, Walker,” Maisyn says before she ends the call.

“Thank you, Katie.” I smile as I take the file from her hand. “I have no doubt Daly’ll try throwing his money around to get his way. He can forget it. I’m saving The Plantation.”

“I know you will. Now, how can I help?” Katie asks as she settles into the chair in front of my desk.

“Any word on who Daly’s using?”

“New guy, no information about him.” Katie grimaces.

“Why haven’t I heard of anyone new coming to town?” I spin my ring on my finger.

“I don’t understand why there’s no gossip around town. It’s as if it’s a ghost,” she says, pressing her lips into a thin line.

“I’m sure someone knows him.” As my anxiety grows, I bounce my knee. “Daly’s not gonna go with a nobody.”

“I’m sure you’re right.” She studies me. “So what’s the strategy?”

“A damn good argument.” I shrug. “And prayers this asshole is arrogant.”

“Why arrogant?” She cocks her brow.

“Know-it-alls tend to not know it all.” I smirk. “Small town courts frown upon big city arrogance.”

“So true.” Katie winks.
