“Yes!” she yells from behind it.
I creep closer, and every so often I can see a wave of brunette hair. “Yer stuck in the mud.”
“Yes, I can see that, Mister…” She stands, and I almost fall off my horse. I cover my mouth, trying not to laugh. “You better not laugh at me, asshole.”
I hold my hands up. “I didn’t know it was you.” I climb off, walking over to her. “What are you doing here?”
“What do think?” she yells. “I’m here for you.” She slings her arms, and mud flies everywhere. “Look at me.”
My heart’s pounding so hard. “I see.”
“Don’t you dare laugh!” She points at me, throwing mud at me.
I cock my brow, thinking of her in his arms. I stand with my hands on my hips. “What are you doing here, Lola?”
“I came to find you.” She wipes mud from her face with the back of her hand.
“Why? Carter didn’t do it for you?”
She wrinkles her nose. “Eww, no.”
“It didn’t look that way when you were kissing him.” Anger boils in the pit of my stomach. “So tell me why you’re really here?”
“For you.” Her eyes fill with tears. “You don’t get to make me love you just so you can walk away.”
“You said that.”
“I didn’t kiss him. He forced himself on me.” She touches her face, trying to stop her tears, only to replace them with mud.
“He forced you?” A wave of nausea hits me—I could’ve stopped him.
“How do you know he kissed me?” I see it on her face the minute it hits her. “My keys … it was you. You saw him and didn’t stop it?”
“The way you were talking, I thought you wanted it.” It starts raining again.
She holds her hand up, and her eye twitches. “You allowed him to kiss me because you thought I wanted him?”
“Yeah.” I shrug, knowing it was a stupid move.
She hurls the handful of mud at me, smacking me in the face with it. “You asshole! I love you, not him!”
“How am I supposed to know; it’s not like you’ll tell me!” I hesitate, that should have been enough for me to know, and my next move is the wrong one. I reach down, grab a handful of mud, and launch it at her.
“Ahhhh!” She tries to dodge it, but it hits her in the forehead. “You’ve had it.”
“Bring it on!” I yell as she sneaks around the side of the car. Lola pops up, catching me in the mouth with a double shot.
“Ha! That’s for being a dick and letting him kiss me,” she screams.
I take a handful and slide across the hood, pummeling her in the side. “Gotcha!”
Before I can move, she tackles me with two handfuls of mud to my face. I roll her over, smashing her back into a puddle. She wraps her legs around me, flipping us over, cause I’m not fighting this sexy ass argument a minute longer.
She hovers over me, mud caked in her hair and on her face. Her eyes shining as a smile spreads across her face. I sweep her hair behind her shoulder; dirty water goes everywhere.
“All of this and not one word when I tell you … I love you.” Her lips part as a tear rolls down her face.
“I’ve waited long enough to hear it.”
