"Hey, little sister," I said as I reached out to hug her. She rushed into the room and wrapped her arms around me.
"Thank God you're okay," she cried out with tears in her eyes. "I was so worried about you when I got your call. I'm so sorry for everything you've gone through!" I smiled despite the tears in my eyes and shook my head.
"Thank you," I said as I attempted to be brave. "I'm sorry to spring this on you. You couldn't imagine what happened." I stopped when I saw the three men she was with.
Two of them were giants, both well over six feet tall, but the third one was a lot less terrifying than the other ones. He was six foot even, and he had the same blue eyes and sandy hair as one of the other men, but he looked more like a politician's handsome son than a bodybuilder. The glasses he was wearing made him seem even more sensitive than anything. I looked back at Stephanie.
"Who are your friends?" I asked, and Stephanie smiled at me.
"This is Xavier," she said as she hugged the tall man with the sandy hair before pointing at the darker-haired one, "and this is Derek and Tristan." She pointed at the smaller man last, and he smiled at me.
"It's nice to meet you," Tristan smiled as he offered me his hand. I winced unintentionally, and he smiled reassuringly at me. "Sorry if I startled you…." I smiled reassuringly and shook my head.
"Not a problem," I told him when I saw the warning look Xavier was giving him. Not wanting to start any problems, I continued. "So, shall we get going? I want to go ahead and leave before Victor shows up again." Stephanie froze and stared at me in disbelief.
"Victor keeps coming back here?" she asked in disbelief and disgust, and Xavier frowned in confusion.
"Who is Victor?" he asked, and Stephanie looked at him.
"He's her ex-boyfriend," she explained. "The one who did this to her?" His eyes flashed angrily as he looked me up and down, and I suddenly grew self-conscious of my collection of bruises.
Not only did I suffer a miscarriage, but I had also broken my right arm and a few ribs. I had to be a walking disaster, especially with the bag of bloody clothing. My phone and wallet were in my hands, but both were useless. The wallet was meant for cash and my ID, but my ID was the only thing left. Xavier frowned as he looked at the phone in my hand.
"Is that still on?" he asked as he pointed at the phone, and I shook my head.
"He turned it off on the first day he got kicked out," I admitted. "He was mad that I refused to answer the phone." Xavier shook his head.
"Do you have any credit cards or anything?" he asked. Again, I shook my head. "Cash or bank accounts?" I continued to shake my head. "Any form of assets?" I shook my head.
"The only thing I truly own is my ID and the clothes on my back, and these were given to me by the nurse," I finally told him. Stephanie sighed and shook her head.
"That's terrible," she said as she looked at Xavier, and I realized that Xavier was her Daddy. He seemed nice enough, but he did remind me of Victor, which worried me. "We should get her to Chicago right away." Xavier looked at me.
"She's going to need some fresh clothes and a new cell phone," he said as he looked me up and down. "How would you feel about staying one night so you can get cleaned up?" I thought for a moment and shrugged.
"Sure," I agreed hesitantly. "Are we all going to be sharing a room?" They all exchanged looks.
"She can room with me," Tristan offered. "We'll get one of those rooms with two rooms instead of just one." He looked at me. "If that's okay, that is." I smiled politely and nodded.
"Only as long as I don't have to do anything," I agreed, and Xavier nodded.
"Sounds great," he said as he smiled. "If you don't mind, Stephanie and I will get everything for you. That way, we don't have to worry about your ex coming after you. My brother will take good care of you." I frowned as I looked from Xavier to Tristan.
"Of course!" I exclaimed, starting to laugh a little as I looked at them. "I'm sorry, I was wondering why you both looked so much alike."
CHAPTER FOUR
Tristan
Even though she laughed when she found out that Xavier was my brother, I thought she was lovely. However, while Derek was getting food for everyone, Xavier had pulled me aside. He had the same look he always got when he was deathly serious.
"Don't let anyone into the room," he warned. "I did a little digging on the guy she was with, and he's pretty bad. He has connections with the local gangs and helps convince people to pay for protection, but a portion goes to him." I nodded.
"No one gets in, and she doesn't leave," I agreed. "You can count on me!" Xavier rolled his eyes.
"Also, not to be that guy, but I would appreciate it if you didn't do anything stupid," he informed me. "This is my Little's sister, and she's going through a lot. No funny business or anything. If I find out you hurt her in any way.…." I held my hands up in surrender.
"Chill!" I exclaimed, and he backed out of my face. "I'll admit that I think she's cute, but I'm not going to make any moves on her. That's cruel, insensitive, and completely stupid. She at least needs a chance to process everything that happened." I leaned forward. "However, if she makes the first move, I wouldn't mind taking her under my wing. That just means that she's ready to move on." Xavier rolled his eyes.
