“I think you do,” Tate said. “So if you don’t go home with one of us, then you’re going with Ash.”

Ash would be her first choice, but he was pissed at her.

“Neither,” she said. “No one is going to get me. They can’t even get in the building. Relax. I’m sure it’s a coincidence.”

Though she didn’t believe it.

“Wonder how much Skye is scrambling now with that message?”

It was pretty brilliant if he did say so himself.

And the fact that someone else was getting attention? Yes, that was part of it for his message.

But he was trying not to be stupid.

He wasn’t ready to be caught. It was best to take some time off and let things simmer.

Besides, inspiration had struck again.

Why repeat yourself when variation kept people guessing? There were faster ways. Messier ways. He already knew exactly where he’d go when the time came.

Fire on a rag in a bottle full of gasoline? Sounded like a great way to send something up fast.

“Who are you talking to up there? Our movie is starting soon, and we’re waiting for you.”

Fuck. Stupid woman, couldn’t even give him peace to enjoy a little bit of fun.

“Just talking to myself. Coming.”

He tucked his burner phone away with the others and left the room, smiling like he didn’t have a care in the world.

Because he didn’t.

HEARD LOUD AND CLEAR

“Ash, we need to talk.”

He frowned, not happy with Alan’s terse tone when he just called his name.

Like it was a command.

“Sure,” he said, putting the rag down. He’d been cleaning the truck in their downtime. Not that they got much, but he’d only been on shift a few hours. “What’s going on?”

“In here,” Alan said, jerking his head into the conference room and shutting the door. “What the fuck is your problem?”

“I don’t have one, but I’m going to in a minute if you give me shit like that again.”

He might be a laid back guy, but he didn’t take crap from anyone.

“The chief just called me in questioning me on the fires.”

“Which fires?” he asked.

“The arsonist. Like I’m a fucking suspect!” Alan shouted. “It had to come from you that I’ve been to all the fires.”

He was shaking his head. “Nope. I haven’t said a thing to the chief about it. Not sure why you think it’s me when there are five other men on the shift on top of it.”
