“No problem, dude. Just go back upstairs to that omega.” Dark brown eyes crinkled in a thousand-watt smile.

He nodded a little numbly, still confused as to what the hell just happened.

The two alphas were already conspiring, spouting names of cheeses he hadn’t ever heard of. Shaking his head, he made his way back through the door, lobby, and up the stairs.

What the hell had he just gotten himself into?

Chapter 7

NIC

Silently, Nic let himself in the apartment. He couldn’t believe he’d just let his neighbors go get Wendy a… What had they called it?

“Shar—no, it was charcu—”

A swish of air was all the warning he had before he ducked his head and barely avoided the swinging bat.

“What the fuck?” he yelped and turned to see who the hell was in his apartment.

Where was Wendy? Was she oka—

The bat thumped to the floor, and a familiar dark-haired beauty gasped.

“Shit,” she breathed. “Nic! I’m so sorry!”

Nic sighed, the tension leaving his body. “What was that for?”

Her cheeks flushed. “I’m sorry. I got paranoid. It was too quiet, and I kept hearing stuff.”

The building was old, so it tended to settle quite aggressively. Nic’s chest squeezed tight, and he stepped forward. The tension only eased when he wrapped his arms around the omega. “Sorry I left.”

“It’s okay.”

It wasn’t. Arlo was right, he should have never left her in the first place.

She rested her chin on his chest, and Nic pulled back to stare down at her.

“Glad you’re back though,” she said quietly. Before Nic could respond, she spoke again. “By the way, where are the snacks?”

He couldn’t resist the way his lips curled. “They are being delivered.”

Wendy didn’t question him, but she burrowed closer, wrapped her arms around him tighter. With a relieved sigh, he threaded a hand through her wet hair and held her close.

She shifted and pulled back, her little nose twitching as she scrunched it. “What’s that smell?”

Nic frowned. What was she talking about?

“It’s not bad,” she continued. “It’s just… not you.”

Well, he had been hanging out with the alphas—ah. He’d shaken Arlo’s hand. “Oh,” Nic interjected. “It’s probably one of the neighbors. I ran into them downstairs.”

“Alphas?” she asked.

He nodded

“Are they nice?”

“They are a little…” Nic thought of the odd couple with a grin. “Eccentric, I’d say. But they are good guys.”
