“I fought hard with myself from just the idea of actually loving you for you until I realized I could no longer fight the shit. I ain’t no scary ass nigga, and never backed down from the challenge. I never gave a fuck, Serenity!” I yelled, slapping my chest with the gun.

“I never gave a fuck about you being who you are…not a fuck about that trash ass pussy nor the grade C head you dished out. I kept coming around because I liked how you listened and understood all of my broken pieces like I understand yours. We vibed, never trying to fix one another but just being there with each other through silence,” my voice lowered.

I felt my shoulders dropped in defeat as a lone tear fell from my eye. Serenity sobbed low enough to hear every word I spoke, keeping her back to me.

“You ain’t gon’ ever hear from me again, ma. I’m man enough to say that shit hurt like finding out my entire life, as far as my upbringing, was a lie. I ain’t gon’ stand here and sound like a bitch ass nigga by saying you’ll never find another nigga like me… cause ain’t no nigga out here like me,” I spat, done with the drawn-out speech.

I dug in my pocket and pulled out a stack of cash then dropped it at my feet.

“This should cover your time… Don’t walk past that nigga. Sit on the couch and let my men clean up the mess I made.” I took a step back.

“Stay safe and dangerous, Serenity.” I turned on the balls of my feet and walked out the door.

The cold air calmed me instantly as I roughly ran my hands down my face. I rid myself of the demonic voice in my head telling me to go back in there and blow her brains out. Nobody got over on me and lived to see another day…but Serenity did tonight.

“You good?” My homie Brutal pushed off the stair railing with a crooked smirk on his face.

“Fuck off, nigga. I told you to wait for my text,” I scolded, pushing past him.

“That’s not what we were taught at Monster’s Inc.” He chortled.

I stopped walking to turn and look at his tall, big ass.

“This was a personal matter. I pay you and that nigga Monster a lot of money to have you and the extra security detail do exactly as I say. I’ll mention this shit in the next meeting,” I gritted out, not in the mood to play with Brutal.

Besides him working for one of the top underground security companies through a crazy ass nigga named Monster, Brutal was my homeboy since we were kids. I trusted him with my life, even though the nigga was twisted in more ways than one. Right now, I wasn’t in the right mind frame for playful banter with nobody. I wanted to go home and drink my anger, frustration, and pain away.

CHAPTER 2

Amaris

10.02.26

“Amaris.”

I ignored Keisha’s worrisome ass and placed my eyes on the new stack of inventory that was brought in last night.

“Amarisss!”

I rolled my eyes and tried to count the stack of boxes with my eyes.

“Girl, if you don’t stop pretending you ain’t hear me talking to you—”

“I heard you,” I said, stacking bottles of Hennessy onto the metal shelf behind me without even looking up. “I just wasn’t agreeing.” I shrugged my shoulders, tossing my sister locs behind my shoulder.

“We were having a great conversation until you started talking about some other shit that I clearly don’t want to hear,” I continued, rolling my eyes.

It was the same shit her and my dad constantly nagged me about.

“You need a man.” Keisha gave me a pointed look.

She planted both hands on her hips like she was about to physically rearrange my life. I hated when people told me what I needed instead of asking.

“I need inventory counted.” I raised both brows in her direction then reached down carefully for more bottles.

Suddenly, I wanted a shot of the cognac to ease some of my anxiety.

“You need sex,” Keisha pressed on.
