"Funny."
Dawson sighs.
"Don't do this."
"Do what?"
"Perform."
The word lands harder than he probably intended. For years I would have followed him into a private office. For years I would have trusted his judgment and assumed he was trying to protect me. For years I would have believed he had my best interests at heart.
Not anymore.
"No," I say quietly.
The smile finally disappears.
Good.
Honesty is healthier.
Dawson studies me for a moment before adjusting his approach.
"You're making a mistake."
"Possibly."
"You don't understand what this release will trigger."
I fold my arms.
"Actually, I understand it pretty well."
His expression hardens.
"Markets could collapse."
"Some should."
"Governments could fall."
"Some should."
"Military conflicts could escalate."
I hold his gaze.
"They already did."
The words linger between us. Dawson exhales slowly. His patience is thinning, and the polished mask he wears is beginning to crack. I find myself preferring the version underneath. At least it's honest.
"Ursa."
The warmth leaves his voice.
"You're looking at this emotionally."
Rana snorts loudly. Several analysts become intensely fascinated by their screens.
