“And the girl?”

Sabre let out a slow breath. “They never found her.”

“You think that’s what this is about?”

“I don’t know.”

JP nodded toward the phone. “It looks like someone does.”

Sabre looked at the message again. You never finished Hannah’s case.

Her voice dropped. “That case was finished. There wasn’t any more I could do.”

“How old was Hannah?”

“Just barely five.”

“So, she’d be thirteen or fourteen now.”

“Yes, but I don’t think she’s Bay, if that’s what you’re implying.”

“How can you be certain?”

“I can’t, but she doesn’t look like her.”

“She was pretty young; kids change.”

“You’re right. I need to go to the office and see her file.”

“I’m going with you.”

“Are you sure?”

“Sure as a tick on a hound.”

She smiled at him for lightening her mood a smidge. “I’ll call Nelson on the way.”

As soon as they were in the truck, Sabre made the call and put it on speaker. He picked up immediately.

“It’s Sabre, with JP on speaker.”

“You got another text?”

“Yes.”

“Read it.”

Sabre glanced down. “You never finished Hannah’s case.”

“Do you recognize the name?”

“I’ve had several,” she said. “But the one that stands out was an early case with a child who went missing and was presumed dead, Hannah Caldwell.”

“I remember that case. The body was never recovered, right?”

“No. And she disappeared eight years ago.”

“Was anyone charged?”
