“Him who?”

No answer.

“What were you waiting for?”

Bay swallowed. “I thought he’d come.”

Sabre kept her face neutral. “The man you lived with?”

Still silence.

“He didn’t come?”

Bay shook her head. “And neither did you.”

“So, what happened next?”

“I started walking.”

“Where?”

“Away.”

“And then?”

“The cops found me.”

“You never went back in after you stabbed him?”

“No.”

“You never saw Todd again after you left?”

“No.”

“And you didn’t know he was still alive?”

Bay looked genuinely shaken now. “No.”

Sabre sat back. Bay had believed she killed Todd, which meant he either fell and hit his head after she left, or whoever delivered the fatal blow either arrived after she fled or had been there unseen.

“Did he ever follow you before?” Sabre asked quietly.

Bay looked confused. “Who?”

“The man you waited for, your guardian.”

Understanding flickered. Then fear again. “He always came when I was in trouble.”

“But not this time,” Sabre said.

Monday afternoon

JP parked outside a worn duplex in Lakeside just after noon with Rourke’s notes sitting open on the passenger seat beside him.

The house next door was where Marcus and Rochelle’s mother had lived years ago.
