CHAPTER THREE
SKYE
Un-fucking-believable. What the hell was Callum’s problem? And what was all that about having a good reason to break up with me? I’d never done a damn thing to him other than try to be the best freaking girlfriend ever. I bent over backward, more than I ever should’ve, to make him happy, and it still wasn’t enough. If anyone had something to be pissed off about, it was me. Unless…shit…could all my fears be true and he knew about Alex all along? If so, why not say something? Why not yell at me and demand to know what happened? I sighed. If he knew and left…. My heart hurt as the old scar was ripped open fresh.
And of all people, why the hell did Alex have to be here? Just looking at his face pissed me off and sent a trickle of dread down my spine, even though I doubted he would say or do anything with Callum around. But, still…could Hales have put me in a more awkward situation two days before Christmas? No.
Taking a deep breath, I walked out to the front door like the weird conversation and kiss had never happened. I wasn’t going to dwell on the fact that my stomach flipped and tied into knots or that my heart pounded hard in my chest for the first time since we broke up. I was also not going to think about how I wanted Cal to kiss me harder as I dragged him down onto the kitchen floor.
“What say you, Skye?”
Startled, I looked up to see I was staring at my boots but hadn’t moved to take them off. Great, the daytime fantasies were already back. Fuck, I hated Callum and what he did to me. Tyler was staring at me, and I assumed he had asked the question.
“I…I have no idea what you said.”
He smirked.
“I said, do you want to come play with us?” His lip curled up. That question sounded more suggestive than him holding up the game controller. Callum shot him a glare. I had no idea why he was acting all jealous. Cal left me, for fucksake and it had been three years. I hadn’t been with anyone in all that time while he’d dated the world.
Annoyed, I nodded. “You know what, I’d love to play with you, Tyler. Just give me ten to get settled in.”
Callum’s dark stare turned in my direction. He swore, then tossed down his controller and marched out of the room. He was acting as jealous as he had back in high school whenever another guy even looked in my direction. He made no sense. Guys in general made no sense.
I shrugged off my coat and hung it up with all the others on the coat hook. Bending over, I grabbed my laces to untie my boots before setting them on the drying rack. I hated the idea of sleeping on the couch where anyone could walk in anytime. The thought sent a trickle of fear down my spine, and I knew I wouldn’t sleep well, but it was still better than freezing to death out in my car.
Grabbing my small suitcase, the wheels of the little rolling bag seemed loud on the shiny hardwood floor as I made my way to the washroom. There was no sign of Callum, and I figured he’d gone upstairs. I loved his bedroom. It looked towards the pond and the mountains, a backdrop to the perfect picture.
Stopping at the door, I reached in to turn on the light when a hand clamped around my mouth and pushed me inside. At first, I thought it was Alex following me. I didn’t think he would be so bold, but he’d proven not to be who I thought he was long ago. My unease subsided when I realized the body pressed up against me was Callum.
“Why do you insist on testing and taunting me?” Callum growled close to my ear, and I shuddered. His raspy voice had always turned me on.
“I’m not,” I tried to say, but it came out muffled behind his hand.
“Bullshit, you were flirting with Tyler, don’t bother trying to deny it.” He wasn’t wrong about that. I may have been testing his reaction. Besides I could flirt with whoever I wanted, but getting under his skin was a bonus.
My pulse was pounding hard, and as if no time had passed between us, my body warmed with his touch and begged for more. I was already imagining his hands running over me and slipping between my legs. The visual was so visceral that I had to bite back a moan.
No, I wasn’t doing this. I’d spent the last three years mourning the loss of Callum while he was off traveling and having fun. I couldn’t let him get under my skin again.
He ran his lips up the side of my neck. “You smell the same. So fucking good.”
I needed to get away from him, but my heart, mind, and libido were on totally different wavelengths, and right now, what my body wanted was winning out.
“Get off of me,” I growled behind his hand, but the arm wrapped around my waist only tightened.
“Why? So you can cuddle up to Tyler. I always thought you liked him.”
“I do, as a brother.” He was acting crazy. He’d never been this obsessed when we were together. “What is your problem,” I said, and he finally removed his hand from my mouth and dropped his arm from around my waist. I spun around and smacked at him but aimed wrong in the dark and got him on the side of his neck with a loud whack.
Callum grabbed my shoulders and pushed me back until the wall stopped our momentum. “Seriously, Callum, what is wrong with you?”
I wished that I could see his face. Maybe then I could understand what was going on inside his mind. He made a sound that had me shivering and my heart galloping hard. I was trapped somewhere between terrified and turned on.
“Stop coming on to my friends.” My mouth dropped open, and if I could get my hand up, I would’ve smacked him again.
“What the hell is that supposed to mean? You’re acting like I’m a raving slut, and we’re not even together.”
“If the shoe fits….”
