“Well, I guess I just won’t fuck you anymore or give you screaming orgasms that make you pass out. Such a shame. Then again, Neven’s ass is much tighter than your well-used pussy,” I snarked back and watched her face fall.
I knew Skye had a thing for me. All demons were drawn to us Fallen. It was the order of things. Skye had taken to calling herself my fuck buddy, which apparently was a step up from a friend. I didn’t care to be honest. She could call me whatever she wanted. It wouldn’t change the fact she would never be anything more than just my friend.
“I called you to warn you about Michael, and this is the thanks I get?”
“Sir, I apologize for the interruption, but you have a meeting in five minutes about the merger of the telecommunications company,” Shilo said.
I startled and blinked as I focused on his reserved face. I’d almost forgotten he was still holding the tablet he’d been so quiet and still. “Thank you Shilo. Well, I guess that is my cue to get going. Thanks for the warning, Skye. Are you going to Dai’s fight club later?”
“Yeah, I got money down on a few matches. Might as well show up and give them my special brand of encouragement.” A devious gleam flashed in her eyes as the tablet beeped for the next meeting.
“Call coming in. I’ll see you there.” I hung up before she could delay me any further. “Neven, get over her and spread your cheeks,” I ordered, making him groan. “Are you complaining?”
“No, I just need another minute. You’re a fucking beast.”
I sighed and let my friend take the time he needed to prepare as I answered the call. It was his choice, and he’d only get fucked harder the longer he took.
“Good afternoon, gentlemen. Have you made a decision?”
Minetta sat in the lunchroom at work and held her head in her hands. She had to find a way to end things with James. When he’d finally come to bed, he’d rubbed his hands all over her body. The insistent touching woke her up even though she’d been sound asleep. She held herself perfectly still, hoping he’d take the hint and leave her alone. In the end, he acted like a rowdy teen as he practically dry-humped her ass until she rolled over. Unsurprisingly she gave in, figuring that would be the fastest way to get back to sleep. She hated herself for giving in. She hated that she didn’t kick him out and demand her key back, and she hated that she was so weak. She was being emotionally abused, she knew it, and yet…
“Rough shift or rough night,” Penny asked as she sat down across from her.
“Honestly, both.” She lifted her head to stare at her friend. She loved how Penny’s nose would crinkle just a little as she thought. Her pale skin was perfect like she was made of porcelain, and she’d shamefully been caught staring more than once at Penny’s flawlessness. It seemed unnatural not to have a single blemish, a pimple, or a freckle.
“I keep telling you to leave that jerkwad. Do you want me to kick him out? Because I’ll do it. I’ll beat his ass all the way to curb so hard that he will never come sniffing around you again.” Penny’s hand clenched on the table, and Minetta had no doubt that Penny would follow through with the threat.
Minetta smiled, a small laugh escaping her throat as she pictured that in her mind. “I might have to take you up on that. I wish they had classes for learning how to become a badass or at the very least a step up from the spineless shmuck I’ve turned into.”
Penny popped a grape into her mouth from her lunch bag and snickered. “Girl, I don’t think there is a course to fix what’s wrong with you, but you’re no schmuck.”
“Rude,” she gasped and then laughed hard. “It’s funny because it’s so true, ugh I’m too nice. Who knew that being nice was an issue?”
“Right? I have an idea. I know. Why don’t we get some dinner after work?” Penny’s face lit up with the idea, but Minetta internally groaned.
“I don’t know if I’m up for that.”
“You’re not up for a meal at a simple restaurant with a friend to have a few laughs?” Penny bit into her sandwich and gave her the death stare. The one that she gave anyone who dared to try and argue with her.
“You win. I need to go home and take care of Toby, but I can meet you after that.” Minetta stood and tossed the rest of her uneaten food into her lunch bag.
“Done deal. I’ll text you the location later. Did you want me to pick you up?”
“Nah, that’s okay. You live across town, but I may take you up on a drive home? I’m not a fan of the late buses nor the walk to my house from the stop.”
“You got it, Minny,” Penny said and grinned wide.
The rest of the day had run smoothly enough. She didn’t even have to deal with Jared and his asshole behavior. Small miracles.
But her luck couldn’t last forever. It was raining when she stepped outside, and of course, she’d forgotten her jacket in the office. She stared up at the bland gray building and the floor she worked from outside and decided just to make a run for the bus. As she ran, her feet sloshed into puddles. Her socks and shoes filled with water, making her cringe. She danced from foot to foot, the cool rain already chilling her as she waited for the light to change. The walk sign flashed on, and she started to jog across the street.
Loud screeching had her swinging her head to the right. She sucked in a breath, paralyzed in her spot as a car barrelled toward her. Everything slowed down in her mind, the spray of water rising into the air as the car spun out of control, the look of horror on the driver’s face, but it was her dog, Toby that made her heart ache. She hadn’t made arrangements for him if she died. Would Penny remember to go and check on him? Panic filled her in that second as she braced for the car to crash into her.
Arms came out of nowhere and wrapped around her waist, pulling her out of the way at the last moment. She blinked, and just like that, everything was moving at full speed. The car’s wheels squealed as it continued to spin past her like a child’s toy as it hydroplaned on the water. The bumper had come so close that she could feel it brush against her dress pants.
The car stopped harmlessly up against a mailbox with a soft thud. She turned around to see the owner of the arms that had saved her life and stared up into the most piercing Nordic blue eyes. The man had to be a model. He had wide shoulders that felt muscled under her hands, and his tall height made her feel small, which was not unusual for her and her average height. His cheekbones were perfectly symmetrical and high. Any woman would kill to have them. Mix that with the arching eyebrows, flawless skin, and little dimple on his chin, and he looked as close to Heaven on Earth as one could get.
“Oh, thank the lord, I thought I was going to hit you for sure. Are you alright,” the woman asked, running up to her. Her savior stepped back, and she wanted to reach out and yell, no, don’t go. There was something very alluring about him.
