I just watched her, not sure how I felt about that. Actually, his mom said the same thing mine did when I went to her and vented.

I didn’t think I was in the wrong, especially since I didn’t say anything, but maybe it was time I talked to him and the boss.

Maybe it was time to think about laying things out and really looking at them.

Maybe it was time to really give all to someone, to see what that looks like, and stop holding myself back.

I knew I was strong in so many ways, but I will be the first to admit that final thought scared the crap out of me.

That’s why I liked being an escort. I was the one in charge, I set the ground rules, and I had no chance to get my heart broken because it wasn’t real.

But Ajax, he had the potential to hurt me like no one else could.

He did, actually.

But they were right too.

Maybe I wasn’t so smart in my actions, and I hurt him just as much by not saying anything.

Chapter 14

Ajax

Inursed my drink at the bar of the Meridian Grand Hotel that was seated in the Historic Downtown area of the city. My thoughts were a fucking mess, if I was being honest and a drink, or three, seemed like the best way to sort them out.

It was probably the dumbest way, but I wasn’t going there.

With a sigh, I took another sip, feeling the clap on my shoulder as I sat my glass down. I turned my head, looking at the man who was taking the spot next to me.

“Carter,” I muttered, wishing the man ill will since he’s the one who brought Spy back into my life.

Okay, not really, because that woman was well under my skin and I really didn’t want it any other way.

“Word on the block is your manuscript got submitted and it’s a hell of a story,” he said, flagging down the bartender.

“Yeah, should be. Probably one of my greatest ones yet.”

“Where did the inspiration come from?”

I chuckled into the glass that was once more pressed against my lips.

“A woman.”

“She has that way about her. Goddess is a great friend.” He thanked the bartender then turned and looked at me, his brow raised. “But doesn’t Goddess strike me as the woman to inspire much all the time. Don’t get me wrong, she’s smart and beautiful, but she’s a little cold too. Not one I can see writing a best seller about.”

“It wasn’t about her. Goddess didn’t do anything.”

“Then why are you mad at her?”

I frowned as I stared at him while he took a deep gulp of his drink, his brow lifted.

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“I’ve asked Goddess out about a dozen different times throughout the last few years, did you know that? No, you probably didn’t. And while she’s real, and entertaining, I don’t know a lick outside of what she lets me know.

“Don’t know what she likes to do, if she has a family, kids, a boyfriend, where she lives. For fucks sake, I don’t even know if she has a real name. She’s nothing more than a smoke image to me. But you, my friend,” he said, clapping me once more, “know her better than anyone else.

“She inspired you to write a damn good book in the shortest amount of time and yet, you’re here moping, why?”
