Actually, quite a big one.

I frowned, clicking on a link, seeing that he was taking a break, and had been for a while. That seemed so unlike him.

Half of me wanted to reach out to him, to ask what was going on. But at the same time, I hadn’t talked to him in I don’t know how long so I’m sure he wouldn’t even know the name anymore.

But that sure left me curious.

And if I was being honest, a little anxious for the man that was once my best friend.

I stepped out of the awaiting car and smiled at the gentleman.

“Carter,” I said, taking his hand.

“Thank you for joining me. It’s a whole bunch of boring authors, most of whom I don’t like, and I need some decent company.”

“You don’t need to explain it to me. Anything you need me to say or do?” It was always the question, always making sure.

“Nope, just be you.”

I smiled at him. “Thank you. It’s my pleasure to entertain you.” He chuckled as he held the door open for me and I stepped in.

“Would you like something to drink?” Carter asked.

“Just a water for now, please. I might take something later,” I replied, offering another smile. I turned, looking around the room. This really would be the easiest bit of cash I could get. He’ll get Goddess, but that’s it. On these, I was never myself; no one ever got the real me, just the image I gave them that seemed like the real me.

“Here you go. Now, you probably won’t know most of these people.”

“You might be surprised,” I teased, taking a sip of the water. I looked around again before stopping suddenly. I froze in place, my gaze skidding back to the man across the room.

He had gotten older.

Sexier.

But that hard glare was still the same as I remembered.

Ajax.

Chapter 2

Ajax

Did I want to go to this breakfast deal?

Nope.

I was suffering from a serious case of writer’s block and hadn’t put anything out in over a year and a half and I needed inspiration, and fast. But every time I tried to write, tried to put something down, I hated it.

I was forcing it, I knew that, but I was also about to lose my contract if something didn’t happen soon.

So, why did I sign up to talk with other authors?

Hell, if I knew.

Maybe I was hoping to find something that would help trigger it.

Normally I went to a thriller or mystery type story, and a whole bunch of people getting blown up at conventions of sorts, especially as writers, would be a good foundation for a mystery.

I laughed at myself as I sipped my water, my eyes scanning the waves of people here. Most I knew but really didn’t want to talk to. Sadly, most of these people bored me, if I was being honest.
