He stopped at the flinch. Not pulling back. Waiting. Reading the flinch the way I'd read a horse's ear, forward meant curious, flat meant afraid, twitching meant undecided. Whatever he read in mine, it satisfied him. He continued.
He was controlled and thorough and relentless and the dominance wasn't performed, it lived in his body the way competence lives in mine when I'm elbow-deep in a surgical emergency. Natural. Structural. Not a choice but a fact. He moved my thighs apart with one hand and the gesture carried no question in it. I let them open and the letting was the closest thing to a conversation we'd had since he'd said no.
He looked. That was the part I hadn't prepared for. Not touched. Looked, with his hand still flat on the inside of my thigh holding me open, and the looking went on long enough that heat climbed my throat and I turned my face toward the window.
"No." Two fingers under my jaw, turning me back. "Here. You'll watch what I'm doing to you or I'll stop doing it."
I watched. He put his mouth on me and my hips came off the mattress and his forearm came down across them and pinned me flat. Tongue first. Flat, slow, one long stroke from the entrance to my clit and back again, and then he settled in like a man with nowhere else to be all night. He worked the hood back with his thumb. He kept the pressure precisely where it needed to be and never once where I anticipated it. Twice I got close and twice he registered the change in me before I did and eased off and let it recede, and the second time the noise I made had no consonants in it at all.
"Say it properly," he said, against me, the words vibrating through tissue. "You have the vocabulary. You use it on other people's animals every day of your life."
"Clitoris." My voice was a wreck. I gave him the rest of it anyway, flat, the way I'd dictate a surgical note. "Two fingers. Anterior wall, about three centimetres in. Now."
He laughed. Low, into the crease of my thigh. The first sound of pleasure he'd made all night, and it cost him something, and I heard it cost him. Then he gave me exactly what I'd specified with the accuracy of a man who had been waiting all evening to be told. Two fingers, curled forward, the pads of them finding the ridge of tissue behind the pubic bone and pressing in rhythm while his mouth stayed where I'd sent it. I came in under a minute. It went through me the way current goes to earth, hips locked, thighs shaking around his head, and I heard the sound I made from a distance, as though it belonged to a woman in the next room.
He didn't stop. He held me through the aftershocks with his fingers still inside me and his mouth still working, easing the pressure without removing it, and the second one assembled itself out of the wreckage of the first before I'd recovered my breathing. That one I felt in my spine. My hand was in his hair. I was pulling hard enough to hurt him and he let me, and the letting was the first thing he'd given me that I hadn't had to take.
My body surrendered in increments. Each one cost me something I couldn't name, a piece of the clinical distance, a wire in the professional fencing that I'd built around every soft part of myself. He noticed every surrender, the arch of my back when his thumb found a nerve cluster I hadn't known I had, the hitch in my breathing when he pressed his forehead against my hip like a man bracing against something, the moment my hand stopped gripping his hair and started pulling him closer. He noticed, and he adjusted, and the adjustment was calibrated to take more.
My hip. My stomach. The inside of my wrist, where he pressed his mouth against the pulse and held there, counting. The soft crease below my ribs where I'm ticklish and nobody in my adult life had known that because nobody had been close enough to discover it. He found it and didn't laugh. He pressed his lips there and breathed my name. Renny, into the skin, and the sound of it against my body was different from the sound of it in a room.
He spoke. Low. Into the hollow of my throat, against the pulse that was hammering there and couldn't be hidden. Territorial language. This. Mine. Here. Not endearments. Coordinates. He was marking the geography of what he'd claimed and the territory was not abstract. He named what he touched. Crudely and precisely at once, which I hadn't known were compatible states. The way I name anatomy during surgery, clinical, specific, lacking in euphemism. My pulse stuttered when his mouth found the hollow above my collarbone and he said a word into it. Cunt. Said the way I'd say carpus or tendon, a word for a structure, stripped of the insult and left with only the accuracy, and it went through the clinical framing like a needle through skin and I have thought about it every night since.
When he moved over me, the weight was deliberate. Controlled. He held himself on his forearms and the muscles in his shoulders were cables under the skin and his face was close enough to mine that I could count the flecks in his irises and I didn't want to count anything. I wanted to stop being the woman who counted things.
I made a sound I didn't recognise. It came from low in my chest and it wasn't permission and it wasn't protest, it was the sound of a body that had crossed a line it didn't know existed. He took it as confirmation. He was right to.
He got the shirt off then. Finally. I heard the buttons rather than saw them, and then there was skin against skin down the whole length of me, and I understood that he had kept it on for exactly as long as it had been useful to him.
He pushed into me in one movement. Not slow. Not cruel. One long deliberate stroke that took the air out of my chest, and then he stopped, all the way in, and held there. He was thicker than I'd braced for and the stretch of it was a fact I couldn't file anywhere. His forehead came down against my temple.
"Breathe out."
"I know how to breathe."
"Then do it."
I breathed out. My body let him another half inch on the exhale and he made a sound at that, low, from somewhere under the sternum. The first real crack in the surface all night.
Then he moved. He was thorough. He was relentless. He fucked me with the same patience he'd shown at the door, unhurried, calibrated, tracking response the way a diagnostician tracks symptoms, adjusting the angle by degrees until he found the one that put my hands flat on the sheets, and then he stayed on that angle and did not deviate from it. I understood, somewhere underneath the noise, that he had been running the same protocol on my body all night. Establish baseline. Isolate the variable. Repeat the variable until the system fails.
My system failed. He got his hand between us and his thumb on my clit and worked it in time with his hips, and he said my name once, flat, the way a man confirms an identification, and I came around him hard enough that my vision went white at the edges. When I broke, he held me through it with both hands on my hips, anchoring, and the grip was hard enough to mark and gentle enough to ground and I understood, in the neural overload of the moment, that this was his language. Not words. Pressure. Proximity. The body's vocabulary.
He finished what he started. Controlled to the end, or nearly. One moment, near the end, his control fractured. A sound from his throat that wasn't language. His grip on my hip shifted from calibrated to desperate, the precision dissolving into need, and for three seconds I saw the man behind the stillness. Then it closed. The mask rebuilt itself between one breath and the next.
He finished inside me. I felt the whole of it, the rhythm breaking into something that had no count left in it, his mouth open against my shoulder and no sound coming out for two full seconds before the sound came. When he pulled out, I registered the loss of him as a subtraction, a pressure removed, and my body filed a complaint I had no intention of forwarding.
What the three seconds contained: his hand leaving my hip and finding the back of my skull, cradling it, the way you hold something you have only just understood to be breakable. Then the hand went back to the mattress. The correction took under a second. I have replayed that second more often than I have replayed anything else that happened in that room.
He lay beside me in the dark, not touching, and the three inches of bedsheet between us held more charge than the contact had.
The clinical framing tried to reassemble. I let it try. I catalogued: his breathing was steady now, slowing toward baseline. His hand lay on the mattress between us, palm up. The scars on his knuckles caught the light from the window, moonlight filtered through January cloud, silver on scar tissue.
One unguarded thought slipped past the framing before I could catch it. Not a thought, exactly. A recognition. A piece of data I hadn't anticipated and couldn't file in any category that made sense.
I wanted him to do it again.
Not the dominance. Not the territory. The specificity. The way he'd traced the freckles like they mattered. The way his hand had tightened on my wrist when he found the scar, not because the scar was beautiful but because it was evidence that I'd sutured my own wound and hadn't waited for help.
