“Yeah,” he said after a beat. “I know.”

Her eyes widened. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I found out last night. In bed.”

“She told you?”

“She did not.” He heard the coldness in his voice. From Cami’s expression, she’d heard it, too.

“Dare I ask?”

“She has a scar. An intimate scar. And while I didn’t calculate the odds, I didn’t think it was likely that her twin would have it, too.”

“Holy shit.” Cami climbed onto one of the bar stools, then took a long slug of coffee, something she often did when she wanted a conversational gap with sufficient thinking time built in. “So that was a surprise for you, I’m guessing.”

“Yeah,” he said dryly. “You could say that.”

“I’m really sorry. Is she here?”

“She’s gone.”

“Is she coming back?”

“I don’t know,” he said, which was the absolute truth. “I don’t care.” That one was more of a fiction. But once enough time passed, she’d be out of his system. It would be a true enough statement then.

He focused his attention on Cami. “What does it matter? Actually, back up. How did you find out she’s really Sabrina?”

Cami held up the plastic water bottle she often carried throughout the day. “I handed it to her. She didn’t even think twice. And, bingo, fingerprints.”

“Smart,” he said. Contrary to many folks’ belief, identical twins weren’t entirely identical. At the very least, their fingerprints were unique.

“I came over because I was worried. She’s pretending to be a non-existent sister because otherwise she has to stay hidden. She’s dead, right?”

“Apparently not.”

“Good point, but you know what I mean. But the question is why? Why fake her death? Or if she didn’t fake it and managed to somehow escape the bomb, why come out of hiding after so many years, only to get involved with a man who investigates shit like that for a living.”

“I have no idea. I’m not sure I care.”

She stared him down. Cami never had been one to take his bullshit.

“Yeah, you do,” she said.

“Fine. I do. I care. But only because I’m curious. I’m wiping my hands of that woman.”

Cami kept her eyes on his face as she finished the last of her coffee. “She hurt you that much?”

He didn’t answer.

“I’m sorry,” she said. “I know you love her.”

“Loved. Many, many years ago.”

Cami just shook her head. “My grammar is just fine. I used exactly the right tense. And,” she said, holding up a hand to cut him off, “you need to tell Ryan. Like right now. She’s one of the original members of the heist team. I’m thinking that can’t be good.”

“I know. I’m on my way in right now. Mason needs to know, too. Not only about Sabrina, but that we’re most likely shifting the plan to run the heist while the diamond’s in transit. And,” he added, “we’ll want to switch the actual Sisters with the counterfeit as soon as possible. If they heist succeeds, they still won’t have shit.

“I’ll go in with you. I’m on the heist team. He might want me in the meeting. Especially since Sabrina knows about the plan. We may have to change it again.”
