“I don’t know every person. Assistants. Communications. Eventually Daniel.”

The name turns my stomach.

Sophie watches my reaction.

“He wouldn’t put me through,” she says.

I stare at her.

“Daniel knew you were calling?”

“He knew who I was.”

“What did he say?”

“That you weren’t available. That all outside communication was being restricted because of the investigation. He told me someone would contact me if necessary.”

I sit back slowly.

The room suddenly feels smaller.

“That was during the lockdown.”

“I know that now.”

I shake my head.

“You could have told him it was personal.”

“I did.”

That shuts me up.

Sophie’s expression changes, some of the anger giving way to something older.

“I told him I needed to speak with you directly,” she says.

“I told him it had nothing to do with the story.”

“What did he say?”

“That he couldn’t connect me.”

I drag a hand over my jaw.

For years, I have remembered that week as a series of closed doors with Sophie on the other side of every one of them.

Now she is sitting across from me telling me she had been knocking too.

“Why didn’t you try another way?” I ask.

Sophie’s eyes narrow. “I did.”

“After you left the Journal?”

“Yes.”

“How?”
