I nod.
“I’ll take some things now,” she says.
“I’ll come back for the rest later.”
“Whenever you’re ready.”
Camille looks at me one last time before turning toward the bedroom.
I stay where I am.
A few minutes later, she comes back with a small overnight bag and her coat folded over one arm. She pauses near the door.
“Take care of yourself, Julian.”
“You too.”
Camille opens the door and leaves. The lock clicks softly behind her. I stand in the middle of the apartment with the ring still sitting on the coffee table and the uncomfortable understanding that I could have stopped her if I had known what to say–I could have stopped her if I truly wanted to—but I didn’t.
And that fact burns a hole in my chest for the remainder of the evening, as I sit in the silence of the space around me.

Steve calls just after noon the next day.
I am in my home office with three reports open in front of me and no real memory of reading any of them when his name appears on the screen.
I answer. “What?”
Steve is quiet for half a second.
“Good afternoon to you too.”
I lean back in the chair.
“What do you want?”
“Hannah told me Camille came over last night.”
I close the report in front of me.
Steve’s tone changes.
“You all right?”
I look toward the windows.
“I don’t know.”
“At least that’s honest.”
I rub a hand over my jaw.
“She ended it.”
“I figured.”
“She was right.”
