“Even this week, you’ve been different.”
I hold her gaze.
“Since the Blackwell interview project started,” Camille continues, “you’re distracted. You’re coming home later. You missed two appointments. You barely take my calls during the day anymore.”
“That project has been demanding.”
“Julian.”
I stop.
She studies my face.
“You know that isn’t what I mean.”
I choose my words carefully.
“The project has brought up things I haven’t thought about in a long time.”
Camille nods slowly, as though that confirms something she already suspected.
“I figured.”
I lean forward.
“But that didn’t create this.”
“No,” she says. “It didn’t.”
The answer comes quietly.
Camille folds her hands in her lap again.
“It just made it harder to ignore what was already here.”
I look at her across from me. For once, I don’t have an argument ready.
Camille looks at me for a long moment before she speaks again.
“Why did you ask me to marry you?”
The question is quiet, but it changes the room. I sit back slightly.
“Because I loved you.”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
My jaw tightens. “Camille.”
“I’m serious.” She leans forward, resting her forearms against her knees.
“Why then? Why after all that time?”
I look down at my hands for a moment before answering.
“Because it felt like it was time.”
Her expression changes immediately.
