Always,

Ana

They’d planned to run away together. My heart breaks for the young couple that never stood a chance.

May 1990

My Dearest Nathan,

You didn’t leave me alone. I have been blessed with the most wonderful of gifts. Our child, the physical evidence of our love, is due late this year. I pray that you make it home safely to meet him.

My new husband is as he’s always been. Far more interested in the betterment of the estate and his legacy, that I am but an afterthought, for which I am eternally grateful. You need not worry, my love.

Stay safe. I pray for your return daily.

Love,

Ana

My brow furrows as I try to comprehend how difficult it must have been for her. When Xavier discovered my true parentage…I shudder, moving on to the third letter.

January 1991

My Dearest Nathan,

Your son arrived on November 12. He’s every inch your father – down to Nelson’s dark brown eyes and calm demeanour. Your mother has spoiled him rotten already, taking him to the Lake House at every opportunity.

There have been many opportunities, I fear. Xavier has been relentless in his pursuit of a “spare” since Nathaniel’s arrival. Yet, I endure knowing you will return and claim us both.

Please, if you can, write me back. I crave the comfort only you can provide.

Yours,

Ana

My stomach churns at the mention of Xavier’s relentless pursuit, knowing full well what that meant. My eyes fill with tears even as a sense of awe consumes me.

September 1992

My Dearest Nathan,

It is with the heaviest of hearts that I write this. Your dear mother passed in her sleep two days past, with Nathaniel and me by her bedside, as was her wish. She asked for you. At the end.

I wish you’d come home. I’m starting to think everything we shared was a dream, and I’d believe it too if it weren’t for my beautiful Nathaniel. He’s almost two now, and every day with him is a blessing.

Despite Xavier’s attempts, I have yet to carry another child successfully. Sometimes I wonder if the fault lies with me. I can’t bring myself to love him, and surely a child is the ultimate profession of love between two souls.

If I could force you from my thoughts, rip you from my heart – then, perhaps, I could at least try with my whole self.

Your lack of response terrifies me. I know you wrote to your mother, so I know you are well. So why do you not reply to my letters, Nathan? I worry you’ve forgotten me...

Ana

The lack of replies from Wetherby confuses me too, but as I read the fifth and final letter, it all becomes clear.

February 1993

Xavier has just shared the happy news. Congratulations on your nuptials, Nathan. I wish you and your bride every happiness.
