The view stays on him.

But in less than a blink, in a fraction of a second, muscles change to fur.

And a giant wolf leaps toward the screen.

The camera tips as a person yelps.

I need—

“Uh, Abigail? You okay?”

Gasping, I startle back into myself.

I have both hands and one knee up on the counter. Literally crawling closer to the TV.

To get a better look at him.

Chapter 155

Rune

ONE WEEK LATER

“Wait here!” I set my phone on the table and rush out of the kitchen.

“What—”

“Just hold on. It’s Haruto.”

“He’s here?”

I laugh. “Just wait!”

Exiting the kitchen, I turn toward the front of our house.

We just got the keys a few days ago, but I’ve already memorized the layout.

Vameer found the property. It’s an old hobby farm near the edge of Hemlock Hills. With lots of land, beautiful gardens that will bloom in the spring, and a small cluster of mature apple trees.

The house itself is nice. Large rooms with tall ceilings. But every doorway is too short for Vameer. So maybe we’ll remodel. Maybe we’ll build. There’s no rush to decide.

I’m just pulling open the door when a portal appears at the bottom of the steps.

A reminder of why it’s good to be near town but not in town.

I smile, ready to say hi, but instead of Haruto, a giant eagle flies out.

And even though I’m a vampire now, I’m still just me. So I scream.

The eagle flaps his big wings as he sets a wrapped package on the porch. Then he screeches at me, turns around, and flies back through the portal.

Vameer is pressed against my back in time to see the portal close. “Did you just scream at that eagle?”

“Technically I screamed because of the eagle.” I bend and pick up the package. “I can’t help my startle reaction.”

Vameer smacks his palm against my ass. “We’ll do some training.”

I lift my brows as I face him. “Train me not to startle?”
