Thinking of all the dead bodies outside, I turn to my dresser, pulling open a drawer with one hand while pointing to my bowl with the other. “Bracelets.”

Trusting Vameer to grab them, I pull out handfuls of clothes.

“Purse,” I call over my shoulder.

There are footsteps.

“That’s time.”

I’m bent over, grabbing a pair of tennis shoes, when I’m dragged backward by that same force as before.

My back collides with Vameer’s front.

The sirens are getting louder.

He wraps his arms around me, lifts me off the ground, and walks us toward the giant hole where my front window used to be.

“Didn’t think you’d fit through the window?” I ask, trying to distract myself from what I’m pretty sure is about to happen.

“I didn’t want to shower you with glass.” His answer is concise.

“Oh. That’s—” My voice is lost as Vameer leaps us through the hole in the wall.

And I squeeze my eyes shut, hugging my shoes to my chest, as we shoot up into the sky.

Chapter 59

Vameer

We drop out of the clouds and into a forest.

When our feet are on the ground, I hold Rune’s shoulders and turn her around. “Where are you hurt?” Bending so our faces are closer, I brush her hair back behind her ears and inhale apples dipped in chocolate. “Some of this blood is yours. What—”

Rune blinks at me.

And the hold I have on our pulse releases.

“Mon Coeur.” I cup her face in my hands. “My Rune.”

Her eyes stay on mine.

Her black eyes.

I hadn’t seen…

“When?” I bring my face even closer.

Her eyes were the first thing I saw when I woke.

The best sight of my life.

But now, like this…

My possessiveness grows.

She looks like mine.

“While I slept.”
