“You don’t need to,” Soren said. “The result stands.”

A brief pause followed, shorter than the last.

“You contest how it is named,” Soren continued, “not what followed.”

“That is correct.”

Soren shifted his weight forward by half a step, not enough to close distance, but enough to change the balance of the exchange.

“Then how do you name it?”

“An intervention,” the messenger said, after the slightest hesitation. “A disruption of internal structure.”

The position was clearer now.

“You will not attempt to compel her return,” Soren said, not as a question.

“No.”

“You will not formalize an alliance.”

“No.”

“And you will not acknowledge that anything has been severed.”

A fraction of a pause.

“No.”

A low murmur passed through the courtyard, contained but present.

Soren did not turn.

“And what do you acknowledge?” he asked.

The messenger met his gaze without adjustment.

“That you achieved what you intended.”

The phrasing held its shape.

Across the courtyard, Eira stepped into view.

She did not move toward the center of the balcony, nor remain concealed. She took her place at its edge, where she could be seen without presenting herself as part of the exchange.

Soren did not look at her.

“And what, in your words, was that intention?” he asked.

“To force instability,” the messenger replied, more directly now. “To weaken existing ties and make further alignment uncertain.”

Clear enough to repeat. Neutral enough to defend.

Soren inclined his head once.

“Then you understand the exchange.”

“We understand the effect,” the messenger corrected carefully. “Not the terms.”
